my kids loves grilled cheese sandwiches but we only eat humane dairy products. there's a local dairy farm that provides humane milk, butter and cream. however they dont make cheese. i see the alternative cheese slices but do they melt?

our kraft cheese slices is the only thin in our fridge that is inhumane. lol weird i know but any suggestions as a substitute would be nice.

humane which someone suggested was a 'luxery' is not a luxery. it's sad that it costs so much but i dont mind even on my shoe string budget. and real cheese is my fave! however knowing cows are raised on megafarms with NO allowance, please understand and comprehend that, NO ALLOWANCE to roam in a pasture. their lives, which give you milk, butter cheese and calcium and vitamins are CONFINED to a space the size of their bodies. they are hooked to machines and milked. when they are done producing they are then slaughtered. that kind of inhumane dairy is a LUXERY i can't afford. sorry but i get testy with people who dont understand where their food comes from.
but as ossis suggested i rather have REAL CHEESE. and there is one brand that offers it at $4-$5 a package. (kraft cheese slices is $2.50 a pkg.) it's humane but i was just shopping around for cheaper alternatives. i was curious as to what the soy tastes like. i'll stick with the REAL and HUMANE cheese.

gee i guess i was in such a tizzy i forgot words LOL the post said "extravagant" not luxery. either way i think people have the assumption only yuppies are into organic cruel free groceries and products. but our fore fathers, up to the victorian age lives on all natural organic foods. they were poor farmers, i'm a poor single mother of four. it's not about what's 'in' or what's trendy. its about paying respect to nature and the precious animals who give their lives for our survival. you want to eat steak, that's fine, but be able to know how that cow spent his life. and be okay with what was injected in that cow to make it 'beefier'.

Some do, some don't. We make Pizza out of soy cheese.... You just have to try few brands available to you and see which one would work the best. More importantly, some brand has strange flavor unlike real cheese. THAT may be more of a problem for you and your children.

I use them all the time. They taste fine and melt just like real cheese. When I first got the soy cheese I thought they would be horrible or at least not that good. I was surprised to not notice all that much difference.

Most soy cheeses contain casein, which is a milk product. If you specifically find vegan cheese, it's probably going to be Follow Your Heart Vegan Gourmet. I've heard good things about it's taste and melting qualities from fellow vegans, especially the mozzarella, although I've never tried it.

just curious what makes milk humane- is it the way the cow is milked?
I am not going to bash your views, but it seems like an extravagant way to live- something I don't have the understanding of.
Either way, I have tried those cheeses and they are nothing to write home about. They melt but taste icky. Your kids will know the difference. Let them eat regular cheese- it has tons of protein & calcium.

SOME of the more expensive veggie ones WILL melt, but I think they taste gritty-ish.

ya know if I couldn't have real cheese and my choice was soy cheese or fake cheese, I would choose no cheese at all. I am sorry Luna, but it is my favorite food.
