I am a twenty year old male, weigh 240 pounds, and play college football. I do not consider myself to be in outstanding shape but I am currently in season so I am assuming that I'm in pretty decent shape. My resting heart rate on an average of 45 beats per minute and I feel like thats too slow for a guy my size. I don't drink often, probably once a week. But when i do drink i drink excessively to the tune of 20 beers a night or more. Also, when i'm drunk i occassionly use spit tobacco. Dont know if that has anyhting to do with it but I figure it doesnt hurt sayin it. I would appreciate it if someone could help me out. Thanks.

Is your resting heart rate usually 45 BPM? If so, do you feel fine when it's at that rate (no dizziness when standing up, no chest pain, no shortness of breath)? Does it ever get slower? Do you have times when you ever have the symptoms above (dizziness, etc.) or exercise intolerance? Any trouble getting your heart rate up while exercising?

Assuming no problems with the above, you're probably fine. However, as 45 BPM is pretty slow, running it by your team doctor would likely be a smart thing.

As others commented, you really shouldn't drink that much that quickly. While you're a big guy and can take more alcohol than smaller people, big guys die from alcohol poisoning as well.

Do you think that asking a bunch of dummies like us about a slow heart rate is going to solve anything ? We have a thing called medicine and it is practiced by people who are called doctors. They should be the authorities. Most college football teams have doctors or a doctor on staff. Wouldn't it be a good idea to consult him about a slow heart rate ? As for the beer , you might want to slow down on that unless you look good with a " beer gut".

1: you are drinking illegally - underage. 20 beers at a time? - you're asking for major trouble health wise - if you swallow that tobacco juice when you're drunk, you can get really sick -
45 bpm heart rate sounds way out of line - 72 is more normal - have you ever asked th team doctor about that?

I predict with your current behavior - you'll be dead in an alley-drunk by the time you're 30.
