I've dealt with anxiety for almost half a year now and its really bothering me. I thought I was going to have a heart attack one day because my chest hurt, but it turned out to be the cause of costo chondritis. However, the doctor also said I had anxiety. Since that day, I've started to pay really close attention to my heart beat, and always find it hard to breathe only when i do pay attention to my breathing? How can I stop this anxiety problem? Also, my costo chondritis never healed, can that be causing the hard to breathe problem? I'm 16 btw. ty.

Medication can help once you are on the right med. It is not the only answer. You need to get to the route of the problem. What is causing the anxiety? What brings them on? The other part of the treatment is counseling. Seeing a therapist or counselor it the second part of the treatment. It can take a while to get to the route of the problem. If you are holding anything in not talking about any problems you may have and if you have been doing this for a long time. This could be a part of it and the counselor and you can get to the route. Don't give up. There is hope. Good Luck God Bless Bruce

you're most likely not going to have a heart attack at 16. I've dealt w/ anxiety for 6 yrs; and i'm on medication. i have noticed though, that when i would pay close attention to my heart rate and breathing, that my heart rate would race because i was making myself nervous and that didn't help the problem. then i started hyperventilating. it sounds like you're having panic attacks. See if your parent or guardian can take you to the doctor. Good luck.

I dealt with anxiety for about 5 years. it is really hard to overcome. when u feel an attack coming on just tell yourself it is only my anxiety. nothing is wrong with me. then try to do something to keep ur mind off of it. call a friend, read a magazine, anything. it is really hard at first but you will get better and better at it. i still have an attack every now and then when life gets really stressful and i just tell myself it will be over soon and i now im gonna be ok. if it gets to the point where you cant take it maybe you should ask your parents to let you go to therapy. and i mean actually therapy, not drug therapy. trust me alot of ppl deal with this problem. its hard but youll figure out what works for you! good luck!

Our thoughts are intimately related to our bodily functions. When you think anxious, upsetting, and aggravating thoughts, your breathing will become rapid and shallow. At the same time, if you are breathing in a "nervous" way, in other words, rapidly and shallowly, you will not be able to think rationally or clearly. Your ability to calm yourself is diminished because your irregular breathing is preventing you from thinking clearly.

Therefore, you have a choice:

* Change your thinking - your breathing will get deeper and slower
* Change your breathing - your thinking will get calmer and clearer

In this lesson we give you an opportunity to learn both about your breathing as well as about your thoughts and how to control them.

Breathing Exercises
Read through this exercise first and then try it on your own. If you can control your breathing, you will have an easier time controlling your thoughts.

Sit back in your seat.

Close your eyes.

Take a deep breath.

Good.

Breathe again.

Now make your hands comfortable, while keeping your eyes closed. You have a choice of any comfortable hand position. We suggest one of the following three positions:

1. One hand on your belly, one on your chest

2. Palms of hands on your knees

3. Hands folded in your lap

Now sit back, feet on the floor, hands comfortable.

Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose.

Feel your stomach expand as your lungs fill with air.

Now exhale through your mouth to the count of five.

Pause.

Repeat while inhaling through the nose and exhaling through your mouth and slowly count to five.

Again, in through your nose and out through your mouth counting to five.

Good. You should be feeling more settled. This kind of breathing is called diaphragmatic breathing. It means to breath from the depths of your belly, rather than from your chest and nose.

If you have the problem through the adulthood, maybe then you should consult your doctor for medication, drugs can also induce anxiety so avoid drug use altogether.

I have to put some music on and soak in the bathtub, Stay in clean clothes and take pride in how you look. I've been married 4 times , I have 4 children over the age of 30 and 9 grandchildren.. I know what stress can do to you. Being 16 alone is a stress factor if you ask me!

You can never get rid of anxiety but you can control it. I used to get really bad normally i would have trouble breathing and break out in a rash all over my body. The best thing to do is eliminate stress or keep some time for you to do your own thing. That way you dont get so overwhelmed. To each there own but breathing excersies and meditation helped me out alot.

I went through the same thing starting at about that age. Go to your doctor and ask for an anti-anxiety medicine. I've been on Zoloft for about 10 years now and it works great for me.

Good luck darling:)

I find when stressed to that point breathing into a (small) paper bag really helps. The muscles in your chest will relax with the added carbon dioxide.
Try it.
