Vegetarians tend to have more fiber in their diets than meat eaters. Add that to the fact that we don't have meat decomposing in our colons and our risk for colon cancer is sharply reduced.

Research suggests that animal proteins, particularly casein (a protein from milk) plays a role in allowing the development of several kinds of cancer. Veg*ns obviously consume far less animal protein (and, in the case of vegans, no animal protein) so our diet plays a protective role that way as well.

Vegetarians also have a lower risk of lung cancer, but this may have more to do with lifestyle in general. Many people choose veg*nism because they are concerned about their health, so veg*ns have lower rates of smoking than the general population.

I'm afraid cancer doesn't discriminate; vegetarians and vegans get cancer too. Veg*ns are far too complacent about their diets protecting them from cancer.

Cancer is a disease caused by normal cells changing so that they grow in an uncontrolled way. The uncontrolled growth causes a tumour to form. If not treated, the tumour can cause problems by invading normal tissues nearby or by causing pressure on other body structures.

NOBODY really knows what causes this to happen - though many people have a pet theory, often ill-informed. There is a proven link between smoking and lung cancer, and between sun exposure and skin cancer No proven link between any particular food and cancer.

I had been a vegetarian for 34 years, vegan for 8 of those years, when I was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. Through cancer support networks I have met three other vegans with cancer, one of them a lifelong vegan, and many more vegetarians.

I'm still a vegan and will remain one; but it didn't stop me getting cancer, it didn't cure me and though I'm currently fit and well I'm not relying on it to prevent recurrence or metastases.

Most people who get cancer are omnivores, but then most people are omnivores.

We do ourselves no favours by claiming 'studies show' or 'research proves' statistics that cannot be backed up.That goes equally, of course, for the omnivores who make claims like 'their bodys are naturally weaker' without backing them up. I would have thought, 'Fexitarian', that this was one area we could resist making cheap jibes at each other.

There is some lowered risk of cancer with a vegetarian diet but no guarantee. Some cancer is hereditary. I never heard of a vegetarian with colon cancer.

My wife's family (from India) is mostly vegetarian.

One sister in law (married to my wife's brother) who is not vegetarian has had colon cancer and now she has lung cancer (non-smoker)--she has a strong family history of cancer as two sisters died of breast cancer.

My vegetarian mother in law had surgery for breast cancer, but she was in her 80s. My wife's grandfather (vegetarian) had prostate cancer diagnosed at the age of 96.

One cousin of my wife is vegetarian and he has had prostate cancer and a brain tumor--he's about 60 years old. He's the only vegetarian in the family who had cancer and wasn't over 70.

You may also know that Linda McCartney was vegetarian and died of breast cancer.

meat eaters are way more at risk for cancers due to low fiber, high fat content in their diet. western diet low in fiber/leafy green veggies is the highest risk for colorectal cancer.

meat eaters are so ignorant...they dont even know this fact!
