Steam is the best thing to help break up mucous.

Get boyfriend to have a hot shower or sit in the bath room when its steamed up. Can also use a humidifyer if you have one.

Also doing some physio on his back. You sit on a chair or couch and get him to kneel on floor next to you, place a pillow on your knees and get him to lean over top so his chest is supported by pillows. Cup you hands and with medium strength hit his back for several minutes then he needs to breath deeply 3 times and have a good cough.

I had pneumonia and bronchitis every year for 10 years growing up and this was a winter ritual which always helps.

Drinking lots of water will help keep the mucous from getting too thick. That makes it easier to cough up. Mucinex is designed to be taken with lots of water for that reason.

water water and more water, the mucinex will use the water to thin his secretions and make them easier to cough up. At bedtime only, to minimize the cough an ounce of brandy is a good thing.

Use a humidifier in the room he is staying in. Take warm baths and drink warm (not scalding hot) fluids. Otherwise, he is doing the right things.

Suck it up for another week or so and I promise this will all go away. A tincture of time will do it.
