I have several that come to mind:

1. Hiking in the woods along the Yuba River, collecting driftwood while the turkey cooked at home. Returning home and having the house smell heavenly and sitting down to a wonderful meal with good friends and a bottle of Merlot.
2. Coming home from college for that first Thanksgiving away and waking up to my mom's stuffing being made and the cinnamon/nutmeg smells of the pumpkin pie.
3. Thanksgiving at the ocean where we brought everything and ate while looking at the waves. The hot tub and a cold glass of champagne was wonderful afterwards too!

Food wise, here's what I love to fix:

1. Roasted turkey that's been brined in kosher salt, brown sugar, water, peppercorn, garlic, and lemon.
2. Cornbread stuffing with Italian turkey sausage
3. Mashed potatos with sour cream and garlic
4. Giblet gravey
5. Candied sweet potato casserole
6. Ambrosia
7. Fresh green beans with bacon and onions
8. Hot rolls with sweet butter and honey
9. Pumpkin pie with whipped cream.

I like my families' traditional fare. The bird, the stuffing, sweet potato's, mashed potato's, corn/peas, rolls/butter, cranberry, fruit salad and pumpkin pie with cool whip. It's simple and delicious, and with my sisters and I helping with the side dishes, it wasn't too much work for Mom. The reason I'll stay with this menu for my own family, is because cooking it, learning how to cook it, and the laughter and conversation that we had while doing it, is a gift that my Mom left to me. On Christmas Eve of this year, it will be two years that Mom passed away. This is one way I can keep her in my heart and in my home.
