Tell them that the protein deficiency makes you unable to debate them. They will leave you alone after that.
Edit* you're pushing peta propaganda in their face? No wonder why they're giving you a hard time, you deserve it.

Sounds like your friends are a little immature. Since you are ignoring them now, it's best to start talking to them again about other things, ignore the negative comments. When it does come up again, do I what I do - I like to tell my friends that the jokes/topic " is getting a little old, can't you guys think of something new?". Sometimes if you get on them a little for eating meat they pull back. It's really easy to do - just refer to the stuff they eat with the real animal name - like like "how does the cow taste?". For chicken, I showed them a picture of a genetically engineered Chicken without feathers - it was probably the last thing you'd wanna eat.
But, it's probably the case that when they were saying "cool" they were feeling not so good inside. They have to have a reason to continue making fun of you! So, it's not going to be easy.
Anyways, if you want a few more reasons here you go:
- it's unnecessary for my health and therefore unnecessary to kill animals
- animal farming is extremely cruel in the modern age, including most mass production dairy farming
- Most meat is unhealthy - they all have lots of cholesteral (including chicken!)
- Most animals are pumped with steriods and/or growth hormone, which you wind up eating.
- Fecal run off from animal farming is a huge environmental problem (eg. pollutes aquifers, lakes, rivers, oceans with e coli and other nasty things)
- Methane production from cows is a huge environmental problem.
- Meat alternatives (if you just have to have that meat taste) are pretty good.
- since our waters are becoming so contaminated Fish and seafood is often not a good alternative.

there is something called the "plutarch defense" that may come in handy with friends like yours...
next time they start in with you about why you became a vegetarian, you might want to try this one on them:
"You ask me why I refuse to eat flesh. I, for my part, am astonished that you can put in your mouth the corpse of a dead animal, astonished that you do not find it nasty to chew hacked flesh and swallow the juices of death-wounds."
turn the tables on them, for once. not enough meat eaters these days reflect on their own eating habits, and they don't need to, they are in the majority and will always have the comfort of their peers to fall back on no matter what argument you have against them. make them uncomfortable instead.
the plutarch defense might shut them up for awhile. give it a go.

Wait a second...
They love animals, but they eat animals?
"Love animals"
"Eat animals"
You can't do two at once...
I don't understand why people are all up in your business about this, people are the same way with me. So you choose not to eat meat, so what?
Just make sure you don't try to argue with people about it, though, they may get into the whole "OMGGGGG GOD PUT ANIMALS ON THIS EARTH TO EATTT" like my 'friends' did.
I still don't get why people care, it's the same as eating meat but it contains no cruelty, you live longer, you look better, you feel better, you... okay, it's not the same as eating meat at all.
It's your choice. Tell them that. If they wanna argue or fight, ignore it. Conflict leads too nothing... except usually more conflict.

If your first response to their questioning is that you love animals, maybe you should learn more about factory farming. Your friends claim to love animals as well (which they probably do), yet they probably have no idea what the lives of the animals they are eating were actually like. They probably don't understand the cruel practices that animals are subjected to throughout their entire lives. If you learn more about factory farming (i.e. crating, debeaking, castration, etc.), you will have a more educated position from which to discuss your vegetarianism. Hope this helps!

If being vegetarian feels right to you, then that should be all the reason you need.
If they tell you that plants suffer, tell them that even if that were true (which is a stretch) that far more plants die on a non-vegetarian diet considering how many plants are required to raise the animal. You are simply going right to the source.

Plants don't have a beating heart and unique personalitys. Now, do they?
It is murder, humans are animals! What if someone slit our throats and put us in scading hot water while we were still awake? How would they like it? That is what happens to chickens!

Oh, cripes, not the plants argument AGAIN.
First of all, plants don't scream. They cannot feel pain, as they have no central nervous systems. If they don't buy that, remind them that the animals they eat have to eat something, and that is plants, so they're killing even more plants by eating the animals.
If they were really your friends, they would respect your decision and ask genuine questions designed to elicit information, not to hound you for your compassionate choice and ask questions designed to irritate you.

I am a vegetarian too and it happens to me a lot as well. I always make it really simple. I just say it is a way of eating that works for me and my body best. Some people eat meat but I just feel good not eating it. Simple~
Some people will never understand so just wrap it up quick!

"Plants scream when you cut them?" What kind of drugs are your friends taking? That's ridiculous--I never heard a plant scream. When I mow the grass, it doesn't go "ow, ow, ow."
Tell them that's what you want to do because you feel right about it. That should be enough.
