This is an outrage and disgrace and I cannot understand if the population of humpback whales is recovering, why would there now be a "scientific whale hunt" to once again jeopardize the population!
It amazes me as to the brutality of these Japanese whalers, and how sad it is that people continue their cruelty to these beautiful creatures.
There is no need for the Japanese to hunt whales. Starvation or ancient native sustenance are not issues.
If the Japanese claim tradition, then they should whale from traditional vessels and row or sail their butts out into the ocean.
Whales are higher mammals that deserve the respect of humans as beings in their own right.
Sorry I do not usually rant on like this and I am not a greenpeace tree hugging soul, but it just makes my blood boil when they say it is for scientific reasons and the real reason is they want to carry on a tradition that was stopped nearly 40 years ago.
If you feel as strong as I do about it then I suggest you boycott all Japanese trade goods and make it known that that you are doing this and the reasons why.

Hi, I have just posted a question about this very subject myself, i.e. shouldn't the U.N. send a fleet to stop (forcibly if necessary) the Japanese Whaling Fleet from doing their so-called "Research". My reasoning is simple. All lands and territorial waters belong to one nation or another. All other waters are International and therefore the U.N. and each member country has jurisdiction over it. Since Japan is going to hunt the Humpbacks in International Waters, then any country, subject to being authorised by a resolution of the UN, would be legally entitled to send a fleet (warships) and stop the Japanese whaling fleet. Japanese are generally very civilized except when it comes to eating whales and porpoises etc.

The trouble is the whaling lobby in Japan has played the propaganda war in a very clever fashion. In Japan, the issue of whaling is virtually unreported and most Japanese don't even see it as an issue. When the whaling lobby and is challeneged by international groups, they play the nationalism card at home to get public support and basically denounce their accusers of racism. Something about Japanese culture seems to give them a fundamental lack of respect for wildlife whether it be whales or other species.

My heart is broken, I feel empathy so strong I wish I could convince these heartless, thoughtless barbarians how very wrong thier slaughter of our ocean's creatures really is.
Minke whales, sharks, huge steel nets that literally rip up the ocean floor and take everything- wanted, unwanted in thier path to die. Dolphins.
What is up with these lying (scientific my @ss) scum of the earth? Don't they know they're killing the planet's environmental balance- the very thing that makes life on earth sustainable?
I wish we could attack them in the ocean. Boycott?
There is a website where you can sign a petition- I found it by searching "save the whales"- going to look it up & post it- back in a flash.

We should do nothing. Its their way of life. Fishing and whaling is something they've been doing for centuries, so the Western world needs to stop interfering. If you want to boycott Japanese-made products, throw out your electronics. Have fun living in the Dark Ages.
