Oxygen is usually good for breathing since our lungs are designed to do just that.

I've had several breathing tubes. I have a horrible gag reflex, but since I could not breath on my own a breathing tube was required for me to stay alive. IV's typically cause a little bit of pain, but are not horrible. Oxygen masks help your body absorb the oxygen from the air into your blood.

I usually have to have oxygen (either a nasal cannula or mask) when waking up from general anesthesia as I don't breath very deeply. So the oxygen enriches the air I am inhaling w/ oxygen.

All people under general anesthesia have a breathing tube put in. They all have IV access as well, in case "the worst" happens. IV's can hurt when they put them in if you are awake, esp. in your hand. owee!
