I have a been a vegetarian for over a year now. Sometimes I do come across things that I thought were vegetarian (for instance gummy bears) but really weren't. I know I'm not REALLY vegetarian anymore, but thats not stopping me. If I find something then I simply cut that out of my diet. Can I still sort of call my self a vegetarian without ridicule? Thanks for answering, and please don't come on here and tell me to give up. Go somewhere else, because I'm not going to deal with your bashing.

It's very common to accidentally consume animal products when not intending to, as so many product (even unlikely ones) are make with then, but it is the intent that counts.

Remember there aren't necessarily fixed rules about vegetarianism, and there are different types that fit better for some than others. A room full of people could all be "vegetarians", and all hold a different diet, it's what about works for you, and your reasons for becoming one.

Vegetarian - does not eat any meat, poultry, fish or animal by-products such as animal fats or gelatin.

Lacto-ovo Vegetarian - Eats both dairy products and eggs.

Lacto Vegetarian - Eats dairy products but not eggs.

Ovo Vegetarian - Eats eggs but not dairy products.

Vegan - Does not eat dairy products, eggs or any other animal product. Will also usually not use any non-food items that come from animals such as leather, wool and silk.

Fruitarian - Diet consists mainly of raw fruit.

Macrobiotic - This is mainly vegetarian but macrobiotic diets often contain seafood. All other meat products are excluded, as are eggs and dairy products. There are different levels of macrobiotic diets.

This diet is based on the Chinese principles of ying (positive) and yang (negative), and people may follow it for philosophical or spiritual reasons.

Pescetarians/Semi/Demi-Vegetarians - Generally follow a vegetarian based diet but eat fish.

Flexitarian - This is a relatively new definiti, it describes someone who still eats meat but follows a vegetarian based diet for most of the time, or who will only occasionally eat meat.

Yes, you are a vegetarian. Mistakes happen sometimes. I accidentally ate some beef recently. (It was a bite from a dish a co-worker brought in that someone told me had no meat.)

As long as you stop eating the foods when you find out and don't purposefully remain ignorant on the contents of food, you are still being a vegetarian.

As for the gummies-- try Sour Patch Kids or Swedish fish-- both are animal free

Of course you can still call yourself vegetarian. pretty much every vegetarian or vegan for that matter will at some stage in their life have accidentally eaten something that contains an animal product. you've said you cut the items out when you found out they weren't vegetarian so don't worry about it. there isn't anything you can do to change the past.

Becoming vegetarian is a learning experience. You learn as you go along. It is not unusual for you to eat something you have no knowledge of. You are giving up the item when you discover it contains a by-product of animal. You are still a vegetarian. I have been for many years and I have eaten products I didn't know were not animal free or used products tested on animals. When I find out, I stop. No one can boast they never made a mistake. Keep trying.

Some vegetarians are stricter than others. I would say that anyone who abstains from meat, including fish, is a vegetarian. Don't worry about minor things like gummy bears or cheese with rennet.

But the bottom line is don't worry about what others think or do. You are a vegetarian, and if your diet isn't good enough for some stricter vegetarian, it's their problem, not yours.

No one can go through life without ridicule. It's something you have to live with when you make choices throughout life. When I first went veg (four years ago) I was a bit weary to. About what people were saying or the foods I couldn't eat anymore (gummy bears was one of them and rice krispy treats) But I got used to it and people don't really bother me about it. If they do, I'll just explain to them why I choose to live this way and if they don't "get it" then it really doesn't matter to me. Because it's my life.

Yes, most vegetarians go through something like that. If you aren't aware of the ingredients, how can you be blamed for eating them?

If you find out something you've been eating is of animal origin, just take it as education and move on. It's okay.

I will always think of you as a vegetarian. There are animal products in many foods that you would not suspect. Many cosmetics, including lipstick may contain animal fat. Googel then check all the links that wikipedia give. There are many different animal fats and some uses are suggested where you might find them where you least suspect. Even in some medicines.

You have the spirit of a vegetarian, therefore you are one.

Most Vegetarians have those little issues at first. Especialy when they're in their first few years.
Just be careful to read the labels.
And Don't give up. [;
