I used to work in a hospital kitchen and it drove me nuts when I had to carefully prepare a nutritious vegan meal for a patient, only to have them scream at me for not bringing them chicken/eggs/jello/fish/ham they assumed they would get. Seriously, why order a vegan meal then complain about a lack of animal products? Could someone explain the logic at work here please?

It would be very surprising if that did happen but if it did, then obviously they weren't vegan and were just trying to be difficult. When I went to hospital they didn't even offer any vegan food so I just didn't eat and had a packet of crisps from the vending machine instead.

My wife is a dietitian in a psychiatric hospital and a lot of people say they want a vegetarian diet and later ask for meat of some kind.

Maybe those people don't know what "vegan" means. I saw Ted Danson on the Conan O'Brien show recently and he said "I'm a vegan, but I eat fish."

I knew a vegan who craved shrimp or sushi...(its been a long time) when she was pregnant and she fought the craving....she eventually gave in to her craving and felt so bad.. I remember her coming to my work crying.....when she had the baby she had them note she was a vegan anyways, she ordered her vegan meal..but had her hubby bring her shrimp to the hospital..even after the baby was born she still had that craving. I bet she got odd looks at the hospital.

When I had my son I ordered a vegan meal and was brought a grilled cheese sandwich, with a side of chocolate pudding lol...

Maybe someone messed up my order and took it into the room across from me, and SHE complained about not having her animal products...

Food for thought you know...

I've heard of "vegans" that claim egg whites are vegan but the yolks aren't....so go figure. Some people like to be able to try to claim moral superiority without really understanding the lifestyle. Go figure. Try to shrug it off and not stoop to policing all "vegans". I can see how that is annoying, though!!!

Vegans don't eat anyhting from an animal source.

Vegetarians however can be so called because they do not eat red meat. Others because they don't eat animal meat at all. Some vegetarians do eat eggs and/or fish but not red or white animal meat.

Jello is a difficult one as said on another question, if it is not on the label vegetarians may not know.

They rationalize that since they are in the hospital they can eat meat and foods containing meat. But generally they are social misfits who complaint about everything. Avoid them ....the vegans you find in modern cultures are emotionally unstable for the most part.

Well, in some cultures, all of those items are considered vegetarian. Seriously. I think American vegetarians are the strictest and the most exclusive.

I feel for you. It's really annoying to go to a lot of trouble to do something for someone only to find out that they wanted something else.

It's the age old vegan double standard. Do as I say, not as I do.
