Congratulations on your decision to make a difference in your life and those of others.
A little pocket book, How to Stop Smoking, was first published in about 1948 with a money back guarantee. It is fantastic and Brean will guide and support you through the process with humor and caring.
First you decide this is what you want to do and there are far more reasons than you are thinking of, time, dependency, smelling bad, being ostracized, not wanting to support tobacco companies who are victimizing you and kids and even third world countries, respect for the planet and air, are but a very few. Health is a whole other consideration, not even mentioned by Brean.
Some advocate tapering off. Brean does not, neither do I.
First you decide you will quit--really get your head into it-- and become a CONSCIOUS smoker by simply greatly increasing your awareness of the process, and become aware you will be a non-smoker. Meanwhile just smoke all you want--'cept around your girlfriend as clearly that's important to you both. AND do breath deeply -- a lot. Walk up a hill if you have one nearby, use stairs, or otherwise put a load on your lungs so you'll value them more.
You'll be surprised by improvement later and it happens very fast.
Think about the cigarette money you are going to be setting aside--every day-- to spend on something you LOVE. Look forward to it.
One day you KNOW this is IT, the day you are going to QUIT. You won't want cigarettes as much as you want to begin your great adventure and it'll be a lot easier than you'd ever thought. Never look back. I had left mine on the stove 35 years ago, looked at them, thought dry and disgusting, and 'ACK!' Left them there, getting dryer for over a week, feeling revulsion for them. Didn't hurt.
As Brean will tell you, you will never have so much as a puff--have your carrot sticks ready! Little candies, candy cigarettes, if you can find them and seeds can help a lot. Smoking will be finished. It's excting and feels empowering.
I do think you'll need to stop for YOU, not for your girlfriend but if she's motivation--great.
Alternatively you might try self-hypnosis tapes, hypnosis, accupressure or accupuncture.
For sure first thing is to decide this is what you want. For me the most powerful motivations were FREEDOM and a desire to breathe deeply without impediment.
Get your subconscious into it and you WILL succeed. You DESERVE it.

If you want to quit you will, if you are doing it to please someone else, but don't want to quit , you won't. The first thing to do, is not buy any. The cravings for a cigarette lasts 5 minutes. You need to make your self not reach for one, and if you can last out for 3 to 5 days, you have it licked. Another thing you can do is buy candy cigarettes to have in your pocket. When you reach for one, that's all your going to come up with, and believe me you will reach.
