You have a blood type that is not compatible with his. If he were to receive your blood, it could (and most likely will) cause a severe and possibly fatal reaction.

Follow this link from the American Red Cross. It will explain what types are compatible with what types.

Even if you can't donate for your friend, donate anyway. Believe me, there is someone out there who desperately needs it.

Types of blood are O, A, B, AB. The positive means you are Rh positive. I am AB+ and am the universal receipiant. I can take all types of blood because I have both antigens, A & B. O+ is the universal donor and can give to everyone because they don't have the A or B antigens. You also have to agree with the Rh factor too-you can be positive or negative. Someone else explained what happens if you don't match blood types correctly.

If your friend is O+, they will have antibodies to both the A and B antigen of blood cells, since their blood cells lack both antigens. If your friend is transfused with A+ blood, the anti-A (the antibodies to the A antigen) will attack the A blood cells, causing them to either agglutinate (stick together), or be destroyed. The results of this blood cell destruction vary, from mild reactions to death.

O is the only one that is universal and can be given to other blood types with the same rh factor. O can only receive blood from the same blood type.

His/her body would reject the blood, as (s)he has anti-A antibodies present in his/her system that would attack the A antigen in your blood.

(S)he could donate to you, but you can't donate to him/her.
