I recently read that puppies, because of their tender meat, are a favorite in many Asian countries such as, for instance, Vietnam. Question: has anyone ever tried puppy-roast?, how does it taste like? Can this be bought in the West?
Thanks

I'm sure you can find it in the West. It's more well-known in Asia, but it's also legal in Canada, Nordic Europe, and Mexico, I think.
I live in a country where it is officially illegal but still popular with some groups.
I've never tasted it. I've heard that it tastes gamey, because of the way the animals are killed and rendered.

I also agree with Emmy. It is thoughtless to call someone's culture disgusting, without knowing any more about it than a few words on Yahoo! Answers.

I am Vietnamese, but I don't eat dog. I am aware, though that dog is eaten in some parts of the country. Contrary to popular belief, though, it is hardly a delicacy in mainstream Vietnam; only in places where other proteins are scarce.

All of you are making really hurtful statements about how "disgusting" this practice is. No, I don't eat dog, but I RESPECT this aspect of my culture, and that it developed because most of the time these people are POOR and don't have the LUXURY like WE DO. And we eat cow, and that's disgusting in India because it's not holy. And we drink milk, which is gross to a lot of Asian countries. If you don't agree with it, you don't agree with it: just don't be ignorant.

Sorry about the rant: to answer your question--no puppy meat is not a favorite. It may be a novelty but I am positive that it isn't "popular". It most likely can't be bought here because Western values dictate a friendship between man and dog, so eating dog (let along puppy) is taboo.

I agree completely with Emmy. That's their culture, that's how they do things. It's the same with India, What we think is okay to be eating cows, is not alright and is disgusting and wrong to them. There is no need to be mean to people who eat dogs.

Personally, I don't eat puppies and cats and I do think it is pretty gross because I love cats and dogs. I also think it is gross because I don't even like meat.

Just like endangered tiger meat and monkey meat. Definately, identical flavor like bush meat, which like everything else tastes like chicken.

It cannot be bought in the West, it is illegal.

It is served in Vietnam... I know someone who was an "honored guest" and sitting upon his bowl of rice was a piece of something that translated to "puppy dog."

GAG!

I've had dog stew in Vietnam, but I don't know how old the dog was...I suspect that it was old, as puppy would be tender.

The stew was good, but too much garlic and spice for me.
