It can take several months and even years to show any signs or symptoms of HPV after a person has been infected with the virus. Some people will NEVER show signs of it. Most people with HPV have no signs or symptoms of the virus and can go years sometimes without even realizing they have the virus.

I was personally diagnosed with HPV after I had an abnormal pap smear. I never showed any signs or symptoms of the virus and for years never showed any signs (besides my abnormal pap smears). Then, about 5 years after I was diagnosed, I develop genital warts from my HPV. It took 5 years!

This is one of the reasons why HPV is so common. Most people are unaware they even have the virus and end up spreading it unknowingly to others.

Take care!

It can take anywhere from a few days to a few years. I have had HPV for over 5 years, and I got genital warts from it about 7 months ago. It took four and 1/2 years to notice any visible symptoms of the virus! Also, HPV can be spread even if the guy wears a condom. Genital warts caused by HPV can appear all over the genital area, not just the part covered by the condom. If you were to have slept with a guy who had genital warts then you could have possibly got it from that guy.

depends on the strain. some types, you'll see symptoms in a few days to a few weeks. there will be bumps forming where ever the virus is (HPV causes all warts, not just genital warts). other strains cause warts on the inside, where they can only be seen on a pelvic exam, and often you won't notice them. and still other strains, there won't be any symptoms at all. its just there hanging out.

She's right. It depends on the strain. You could show symptoms... you may never show symptoms. That's why it's important to go to the gynocologyst every single year.
