Hey.. so 5'7 and 198 lbs, about.. and you want to lose weight..that is a great first step! :) Losing weight will actually help manage your diabetes, so that is good news for both problems.

First off.. aspartame is safe (studied extensively by the government!), and it is a much better choice to drink diet sodas then it is to drink regular sodas. Splenda is also a good choice to sweeten up foods.

Anyway, what you want to do is eat a healthful diet and exercise...I'm not sure how much you do now in these two topics, but I will give you some ideas that can help.

For what you eat... make sure your carbohydrates are complex carbohydrates-which means whole grain, whole wheat, etc (not full of sugar..). These have fiber (which can help control blood sugar; it also helps you stay full--so you'll eat less..aim for at least 25grams a day, up to 45, depend on how well you tolerate-increase it slowly!), and many vitamins and nutrients that you need. Look for 100% whole wheat on labels, or the whole grain logo as well.

Protein: make it lean meats! that means white meats like turkey, chicken, fish, and also you can eat beans, soy, or other products packed full of protein--don't do atkins--while it may be low carb and help you lose weight, it will just add heart disease to your problems because it is so high in fat and can raise your cholesterol, and as soon as you want to eat carbs again, the weight comes back on--so stick with eating good carbs from the start.

For fats.. eat mono and polyunsaturated fats.. and avoid saturated and trans fats as much as possible. The first two are the "healthy" fats, you can find them in canola oil, olive oil, nuts, avocados, and many others. Saturated and trans fats can clog your arteries and raise your cholesterol--so try to eat less than 15g of saturated fat per day and no trans fats!

For exercise..even walking helps! Try to walk half an hour on most days. If walking gets boring, try going to different parks or areas to see different scenery. You can also jog, run, bike, or play a sport. Any movement helps burn calories and lose weight, all which can help reduce the effects of diabetes and help you enjoy your life, healthy and slimmed down! :)

Hope that helps.

First of all, apologies for certain of my fellow Americans. We're not all mean, ignorant, and prejudiced.

However, sir, excuse me for presenting this bold truth:
the fact that you are a geezer is no excuse! I ain't no spring chicken either, and that will never stop me from exercising.

I'll limit my comments to the exercise side. I suspect you know, or can easily find out, what the best diet is--you just need to put it into practice.

In addition to walking 30 to 60 minutes per day, you should do properly executed stomach crunches. If you really are determined to lose that gut--fast--do 400 a day.

No, I'm not kidding. Yes, you can do it, because I can do it.

I don't do 400 in a row; I do 50 at a time and intersperse them with other exercises. That will stretch your exercise time to around 40 minutes. Combine a daily session like that with several good, long healthy walks per week.

Walking is good for your abdomen because it actually works those muscles, if you maintain good breathing and posture.

Then, to cut the boredom, take up some other activities that are active and fun--museum hopping, social dance classes, skating--you decide.

Good Luck!!

Hi and welcome to our little club!!! It is not easy to loose weight and control diabetes at the same time.

Work mostly at the diabetes and get tight control. Food plan should be low carb and high exercise!! Walking about an hour a day at a fairly good clip works wonders.

I recommend a couple of books to you: Diabetes: The First Year; and Atkins Diabetes Revolution. Both these books are available world wide in bookstores and on Ebay. They are excellent as they explain a lot of questions about food plans and exercising for tight control.

At 60, you are also probably on Statin drug and/or hypertensive drug? Some of these make loosing weight almost impossible.

This is what worked for my husband and me. We went to a registered dietitian who taught us how many carbohydrate to eat at each meal. We are on a low fat diet with whole grains, such as oatmeal and 100% whole wheat bread. My husband gets 5 carb choices at a meal, ( 2000 calories a day ), I get
4 carb choices at a meal, ( 1,650 calories a day ).
We get 1 protein a meal. Example: breakfast, 1 egg cooked in Pam, or for lunch and dinner we get 3oz. lean meat, like a small boneless chicken fillet. We eat it cooked baked, broiled, or grilled. Also we get a small side salad with lunch and dinner with 2 tablespoon of light dressing. Here is the way our diet looks:

Breakfast: 1 protein = 1 egg boiled or cooked in Pam
1 fat = 1 tablespoon light margarine
5 carb choices - 1/2 cup oat meal cooked in water= 2 carbs.
1 slice 100% whole wheat bread= 1 carb
1 fruit such as a 1/2 grape fruit = 1 carb
1 cup 1% milk = 1 carb.
Coffee

Lunch and Dinner - 3 oz low fat meat

5 carb choices - 1 starchy vegetable - such as 1/2 cup corn =
1 carb
1 cup low fat butter milk or 1% sweet milk =
1 carb
1 slice 100% whole wheat bread = 1 carb

1 fruit, such a a small apple, OR 1/2 cup of canned peaches without sugar. We add 2 pks of Spenda. = 1carb

3 or 4 sugar free cookies, depending on serving size, read package for how many = 1 carb

and our small salad with light dressing.

We have a 1 carb snack at 7:00 PM. This is all we get until the next morning.

We have been on this a year. My husband has lost 60lb in about 10 months, and I have lost 24.

I hope I have explained this where you can understand it. I would suggest you get your doctor to send you to a registered dietitian, because everyone is different with different needs.

Good luck!

I have heard recently that anything with Aspartame (artificial sweetener) in it can cause all kinds of problems with being over-weight and even give signs and symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, lupus, Parkinson disease, cramps in legs, plus all kinds of problems. If you think this may be part of your problem; look it up online and get tons of information about Aspartame. It is slowly killing a lot of people and they don't even know it.
The best thing that you can do is to stop drinking diet drinks, and eating foods prepared with Aspartame in them.
Many people notices a difference after 30 days or so. Aspartame is a killer. Pass information on to your friends and family who are diet freaks. It may save their life.
Good luck to you.

You should try the book Body for Life by Bill Phillips. I am using this book to get in shape my self, although I am the complete opposite of you I think we both could benefit from this book!
