Three days ago I gave two kittens to a lady...last night she told me she has mild allergies & gives cats baths with Dawn dishwashing liquid to lower dander & kill fleas...I asked her to please not do this, as I have seen pics of cats given baths with products not for cats..such as people shampoo, soaps, dog products...not only does it remove the oils they need, it can kill them...it can act like an acid & literally burn them...it might be fine on one, then kill another...you just don't know...She says she did it to her two for years & that's just vets wanting to scare you into buying expensive products...I'm very upset & thinking I made a very wrong decision in giving her the kitties...If anyone has some facts or links I could show her, it would be greatly appreciated...& yes, I would take them back in a heartbeat..

& yes, my cat is spayed...these came from the homeless cats in my neighborhood that I feed..

I was wrong, I guess it's ok, look at this posting from the purebred cat rescue site... HUMMM,.....
If bathing the cat at home several things will be needed: a large towel, shampoo & conditioner, cotton balls and a hair dryer. A double and deep kitchen sink helps as the cat can put it's paws on the ledge that separates the two sinks and feels more secure. It is convenient to have a small carrier to dry the cat in. For shampoo in an adult you can use Dawn dishwashing liquid (be careful not to get into the eyes) and baby shampoo or a commercial cat shampoo (tearless) around the eyes. Dawn is a good degreaser. Then you want to follow up with an actual shampoo. In most kittens and cats with fine coats, a shampoo for "fine hair" works well. Many cat shampoos are available, some with color enhancers and others for the particular type of coat. First put cotton balls inside the ears so water doesn’t get down in the ear canal. Then wet the cat down with warm water. Start with the Dawn (diluted down 1 tablespoon to 2 cups of water) and work all over the body being careful to avoid the face.

Dawn is harsh! I hope she doesn't do that. I'd think people shampoo would be better than that if she didn't have Cat shampoo!

Darn the silly woman, she doesn't know what she's talking about!
Dawn dish soap does NOT kill fleas. It certainly doesn't stop dander - if anything, it will dry out the cat's skin and cause them to lose MORE skin (dander)!. If the silly woman is allergic, why does she have cats?
If I were you I'd get the cats back from the woman. If she has these dumb ideas, who knows what else she would do - what's she going to do when the cats get ill one day, dip them in garlic?
It's unlikely the dish soap will hurt the cats, but it won't be doing them any good. And no, vets do not say this just to 'scare people in to buying expensive products' - we say it because we know it doesn't kill fleas. Silly woman.
By the way, you can use Frontline spray to kill fleas on kittens from 2 days of age - it's safe and, unlike Dawn, actually works.

I use pet shampoo when I give my cats a bath. It's not expensive. If that is going to break you then maybe you shouldn't have pets. (Not you but that bean brain of a woman who thinks she knows better than a vet.)
How often is she bathing this kittens? Once a year seems fine enough. (unless it's the hairless breed) If she is allergic to them then maybe she shouldn't have cats. She could wear gloves while bathing them. I have never had a problem with bathing my cats using the pet shampoo.
She reminds me of this guy at work who said that dentists just want you to get your teeth cleaned twice a year so they can make more money. Bean brain.

We have a wonderful vet and they RECOMMENDED Dawn for getting rid of fleas. They said Dawn is not-abrasive, and it kills the fleas. We washed our kitty in a diluted Dawn bath and watched the fleas fall off!
In fact, the reason they recommended Dawn was that many fleas shampoos and pet shampoos have chemicals that can make them quite abrasive.
Talk to your vet! They'll know better than anyone, but washing an animal with Dawn is certainly not cruel!

We have used Dawn for years on our cats it works wonderfully.
We do diluted it usually at table spoon for every2-4 cup of water depends on what cat we are bathing.
Than I do a fallow up with baby shampoo.(my cats have shown an allergy to every pet shampoo I have tried and this is what my Vet recommended)
Also my Aunt works for a cat rescue and they have been using Dawn on the rescues for over 20 years now and have never had a single case of it harming a cat or a kitten.

Yes I just bathed my cat and dogs in dawn dishsoap and it works wonderfully. I follow up with an oatmeal dog shampoo and for my cat I use GNC hypoallergenic moisturizing shampoo with aloe and oatmeal. He seems very happy and I use COMFORTIS flea pills for both dogs and cat. The Comfortis is the best flea pill I have ever used. I didn t use for 3 months and that is why I used dawn before I gave the pill this time. Just to make sure to get rid of any fleas before giving the Comfortis.

At the clinic,we use dawn dish soap to clean cats if they get into something that we need off!!!! Oils and grease, ect.
I would recommend something a little gentler to the kittens. They make a shampoo specifically designed to remove pet dander and not create dry skin....its called Allerpet....might want to clue her in.....might want to take back the kittens. Its up to you.

No, it doesn't kill the fleas but will stun them so you can comb some of the fleas out of the fur. but there will still be flea eggs. Go into a vets office and ask to buy one tube of Advantage for cats. That will cost between $12 and $14. Place it on the back of the head near the neck. Fleas will be dead in approx 8 hours. Don't use over the counter flea meds as they can harm or kill your cat.

Dawn is fine for washing pigs but should not be used on a cat unless its been in an oil spill. It can cause several skin irritations, if she insists on torturing the kittens, plz get your babies back and place them with people who appreciate soft healthy cats
