Interestingly this question was put to Jesus by the religious leaders. They divorced on all sorts of grounds. Why, if a wife burned dinner, they could divorce her. How cruel. So some of the Pharisees – intent on tempting Jesus - asked Jesus if it was lawful to divorce on just any grounds. In his reply, Jesus directs their attention to the account in Genesis where we read that God intended for husband and wife to be one flesh. Jesus' reply is found at Mark 10:11 and Luke 16:18 with the full question of the Pharisees and the full response of Christ recorded at Matthew 19:3-9 and Matthew 5:31.

Of course, professed "Christians" nowadays get divorced at the drop of a hat and remarry before the hat hits the ground. According to Christ, however, divorce with a view to remarriage is permitted on the ground of adultery. Put another way, adultery (a form of fornication) is the ONLY ground for divorce which would permit the innocent party to marry again. This is the principle by which my religion abides.

Jehovah's Witnesses follow the standard Jesus set. He said "I say to YOU that whoever divorces his wife, except on the ground of fornication, and marries another commits adultery.” (Matthew 19:9) Fornication is the only scriptural ground for divorce. Unlike adultery, fornication is a much broader term. Unlike adultery, which is limited to sexual intercourse with someone of the opposite sex, fornication involves ANY grossly immoral use of the genital organ(s) of at least one human; also there must have been two or more parties (including another consenting human or a beast), whether of the same sex or the opposite sex.

when you say I do when you get married it is suppose to be forever and ever until one dies. people get divorce like we threw the trash out. they collect spouses. Jehovah God told us the only time we can get divorce is when your spouse is sleeping around with someone else, adultery. then that is up to each person to decide if you want a divorce, if you can forgive your spouse. I was married to my husband for 35 years when he died. we loved each other. he is gone almost four years this coming January.

The Biblical Reasons For Divorce

Adultery: Jesus said, "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery," (Matt. 19:9). The word in Greek for immorality is porneia from which we get the word pornography. Sexual immorality, i.e., adultery, is a grounds for divorce according to Jesus.
Abandonment: In addressing the issue of husband and wife, Paul said, "Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace," (1 Cor. 7:15).

When one partner is unfaithful (adultery) the INNOCENT partner gets to decide if they will forgive their mate or not. They can marry someone else if they like.

In any other cases where one leaves the other due to violence or non-support or whatever, re-marriage is unscriptural.

Even if it is allowed better not. When we tie a knot with some one we must have the courage or guts to face it.

quranic verse for divorce

Divorced women shall wait concerning themselves for three monthly periods. Nor is it lawful for them to hide what Allah Hath created in their wombs, if they have faith in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have the better right to take them back in that period, if they wish for reconciliation. And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree (of advantage) over them. And Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.
A divorce is only permissible twice: after that, the parties should either hold Together on equitable terms, or separate with kindness. It is not lawful for you, (Men), to take back any of your gifts (from your wives), except when both parties fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah. If ye (judges) do indeed fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah, there is no blame on either of them if she give something for her freedom. These are the limits ordained by Allah; so do not transgress them if any do transgress the limits ordained by Allah, such persons wrong (Themselves as well as others).
So if a husband divorces his wife (irrevocably), He cannot, after that, re-marry her until after she has married another husband and He has divorced her. In that case there is no blame on either of them if they re-unite, provided they feel that they can keep the limits ordained by Allah. Such are the limits ordained by Allah, which He makes plain to those who understand.
When ye divorce women, and they fulfil the term of their (’Iddat), either take them back on equitable terms or set them free on equitable terms; but do not take them back to injure them, (or) to take undue advantage; if any one does that; He wrongs his own soul. Do not treat Allah’s Signs as a jest, but solemnly rehearse Allah’s favours on you, and the fact that He sent down to you the Book and Wisdom, for your instruction. And fear Allah, and know that Allah is well acquainted with all things.
When ye divorce women, and they fulfil the term of their (’Iddat), do not prevent them from marrying their (former) husbands, if they mutually agree on equitable terms. This instruction is for all amongst you, who believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is (the course Making for) most virtue and purity amongst you and Allah knows, and ye know not.

Religions, like divorce, are man-made constructs. Only the most extreme would be ill-educated and bigotted enough to prohibit it.
