i bought two mice from a pet shop a while ago and they told me i had 2 females, it turned out one was male and they had 3 babies 4 weeks ago. i decided to keep them all and i have now separated them. i kept the mum with the girl baby and the dad with the 2 boys. This was about an hour ago and the mum seems very agitated and is looking everywhere for the rest of the babies. is she going to be ok?

Hi I'm a small animal breeder and yes its good that you separated them. the males can get the mother pregnant at only a month old. she will be ok all my new mothers fret when i take there baby's at weaning. And male mice make wonderful fathers i don't know what that one person is talking about. If the father was in with the mother shortly after she had the baby's she might be pregnant again. rodents can get pregnant again 12 to 24 hours after they give birth. So keep a eye on her but she should be fine after about a day.

Thanks Denise

It is perfectly normal for mothers to show signs of stress after seperation of their babies. She is just worried about her babies and in time will calm down. You did the right thing by seperating them after the weaning period. You will need to keep an eye on the father and young males as they get older. As they reach adulthood, they may start fighting and need further seperation. It's hard to say as animals are unpredictable and each will act differently. I would not recommend breeding your mouse again. The litter size seems very small. She may be a very young female? Anyway good luck with your new mice!

She'll be fine & should calm down soon. You did the right thing by separating the males & Mama mouse just needs a bit of time to get used to this. Papa mouse & sons will keep each other company, as will mom & daughter.

Give her time and she will calm down. You may have taken her babies quicker than she was ready for them to go but they're sexually mature (if I remember correctly) at about a month old and will impregnate their mother so it's best that they're out.
