Religion it seems to me is for those unable to accept the human condition and face it, our short life span in particular fills them with such dread that instead of focussing in on the wonders of art and literature and philosophy and the awesomeness of nature, they obsess over the topic they fear which is death and bore the rest of us with tales of ghosts and the supernatural.

Think: Quite the contrary, they are so afraid of death they have invented an after-life to gloss over what really fills them with dread.

Well, there are decent people in religion as well, but yes, if you're fearful and self-centered, you'll find religion very attractive.

That's part of how religions attract and retain adherents: they appeal to the worst of us and the worst in us, knowing that there's a big market there.

If there were a version of atheism that appealed to slow-witted, arrogant people, suddenly atheism would be a major force like religion. It's the fact that atheism requires some discipline that keeps it marginalized: there just aren't enough disciplined, smart people to make up a large movement.

The question is interesting as asked by the questioner. The religion guides us towards the endless cycle of birth & death. Moreover, the religion dicates us the practice of certain rules prescribed by its Founder. In otherwords, the religion is a social contract. Also, the religion has first four fold aim of life.!1. Religion 2. Economic 3. Married life 4. Salvation. It may be out look of the questioner to suppose the role of Religion but the fact is stated above. Can any one tell about Death including science where it is written that death will occur at a particular time & place. How one can dicates about nature without religion. Thanks for the questioner to clarify about religion.

I think so in a way. I raised up by a dad who was a priest. Can you imagine the daily lectures I had on life and death? There are so much holes in religion I get confused. When I speak to a representative of Christianity, I leave with this fear I will go to hell when I die. I believe there is supernatural things out there- but mainly my motto is 'seeing is believing'. If someone has faith in God then good for them, that's how they want to live their life. Just don't lecture me about going to hell.

"Do you think that Atheists are afraid of an afterlife, and so secretly hope that there are no further adventures than this one? " I can only speak for myself. This is NOT the case for me. I have NO fear of death or what happens after. I also seek "further adventures" in this life. "After all, life is a known quantity" Sorry I don't agree with this either. You DO NOT know what will happen tomorrow. That is shy I live for TODAY not what will happen after I am dead. "Does no one just sail on with self confidence?" YUP that and the help and support of my friends and family. @Caitlin, You are WRONG, I am not lying to myself or anyone else. Don't assume that you can project your fears onto others. Doing so is just arrogant.

Lifespans don't grow with a belief in God. Besides, according to my belief, I'll be in Heaven when I die. Why would I fear that?

To the religious, wouldn't it be atheists who should be more fearful of death?

Also, try not to generalize. I enjoy the wonders of art and literature and philosophy and the awesomeness of nature as much as the next atheist.

EDIT: Wrong. You misinterpret religion. Heaven is not mean to be an "extension of life" but a reward for our existence here. If this is really the case (as Christians believe it is), then most theists really aren't afraid of death - they have something after that. That doesn't mean they can't see the beauty of the world around them.

Let me ask you something. If there really is nothing after death, why do you care if someone believes otherwise? Are you afraid they'll fail to figure it out?

Most of the members of my church are extremely successful people, we receive in offerings each year more than twelve million dollars. You don't get that from a congregation of idiots, but the majority of them are not self-centered people at all, they would do anything they could for those members that are in need.

As a matter of fact we have a ministry that caters to just that, helping those who are in need. We also have a large homeless shelter that we operate.

As to death, I think that believing death to be the end of all things is the easy way out. You don't have to be concerned with how you live if there is nothing after you die.

As to living my life as though there is a judgment, nothing could be more enjoyable. I get myself into much less situations that could be harmful to me because I believe that God is watching me. I do not fear judgment because I know that in my heart I am right with God, I would fear things like A.I.D.S. and S.T.D.s if I did not live a lifestyle honoring to God. To me those are the things to fear, because they destroy the body before they kill you.

You must really be smart to know the motivations of a large group of people without even being one of them. Maybe you will be a shrink when you grow up.

Expresso Kid ... I take notice that your avatar really looks emotionally mature.

Religion may be coswallop, but there is a spychology behind it. It helps overcoem yuor fear of death by giving you the illusion you won't die, and if something goes wrong, you have something to put ti down to.

"Religion" as it is commonly called is something that people invest their life in for many different reasons. Some are fearful, but others are seeking truth. My life is stamped property of Jesus Christ, not because I fear hell and judgment, but because I understand that this life isn't about just us, it's about a service to Him. "For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God." Romans 14:11.
