I really have to learn Mandarin, but I can't go to lessons. Is there any effective way in self-studying it or do I really have to have a teacher? Are there resources online for available for free to people who want to study the language? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. :)

a good starting point is the Pimsleur Mandarin course. It's audio only.

Additionally I suggest you buy "Rapid Literacy in Chinese" (available on eBay). It teaches 750 characters. That is a good starting point.

Then, read a lot and hear a lot. ChinesePod.com has good and free Mandarin MP3. Read a lot too, I suggest primary childrens books. It's a litte boring, but the only way to read fast. Newspapers are way to difficult.
