If you feel that healthcare being free is an act of communism, please don't answer, because I find that notion to be preposterous in about every sense of the word.

You get insurance for you car, your house, your items, you even get life insurance....you shouldn't have to pay out the nose because your child is dying of cancer, or your father is in a coma, or your mother got her legs smashed in a wreck.

Religion and medicine are both a part of healing....or some other gibberish quote to justify why I have obviously posted this in the wrong category because I wanted a response in a timely manner.

Steve Armanto,

And who is paying for a 5.6 million dollar tank that gets destroyed by a $15 RPG? Me and YOU, that is who.

I'm a Canadian and we have free health care.

If I stub my toe, I go to my doctor or a walk-in clinic, for free. If I go to the hospital for a stubbed toe, they'll send me home with a prescription for Tylenol and tell me to see my doctor.

If a car runs over my foot, an ambulance will take me to the hospital immediately. Our government (taxes) pays $200 for the ambulance and, only if the patient can afford it - they pay $40. Medications are free if administered in hospital.

If my leg needs to be reattached, a surgeon will do it immediately. For free. I will have to recover in a room with three other patients until I can go home.

If I cannot walk and there's no one to take care of me, the "no-frills" hospice is free, If I have additional health insurance, I can stay in a nicer place.

No human being should EVER have to pay to be alive.

Forcing people to pay money or die is much, MUCH worse than Communism has ever been.

It's a human right to be kept alive and as healthy as possible.

I'm waiting to hear a good reason why there shouldn't be free universal health care. Until recently (until the signing of the Free Trade Agreement with the US), Australia had exactly that - free universal healthcare. Ironically, since signing the FTA in July 2004, American pharmaceutical companies have pressured the Australian government to remove the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (which subsidises the cost of medicines on the list) because it interferes with trade.

Apart from commercial, profit-driven reasons, there really is almost no reason why governments such as those of the UK, Australia, France, Sweden or Denmark can't successfully provide free universal healthcare. It's a basic right that should not be dictated by the amount of £100 notes in your wallet.

I believe more jobs should pay for health benefits. But I do not believe that doctors should not charge their patients for thier service, with the exception of emergency care. My reasons:
1) Doctors who are paid by the government with a minimum paycheck will not be motivated (not talking about all doctors, many work just because they love to help people, but there are still some who are motivated by money) to provide their best service, or to do further research to progress medical care
2) If health care were free, taxes would rise to pay for it, and people, believing that they should get their money's worth out of the taxes they pay, would start pooring into hospitals for trifling colds and headaches, creating a shortage of doctors for when a real emergency arises.

No I don't believe free health care is communism, but I do believe that it would lessen, rather than improve, the health quality of our socity.

Btw, coma and legs smashed would apply as emergency care. It is illegal for any hospital to turn away patients in need of emergency care whether or not they have the ability to pay.

As far as cancer goes, in my opinion, that should qualify as emergency care, but that's still an issue yet to be resolved. you obviously feel passionate about this, there are always ways to express these things to congress. Every person's opinion can make a difference.

We had a discussion on this in a sociology class and one girl replied in all seriousness "well it's not fair that the rich have to pay for poor people's health care." So if you count attitudes like that as a good reason, then there ya go.

But of course you don't, and other than that kind of mindset there is no good reason for not having free health care.

There is free healthcare in most of europe and it works fine. A country can afford it, if it doesn´t spend all its resources on warfare.
