Van Gogh's early paintings in Holland were dark and depicted the everyday life of the poor farmers.
Later he lived in the Provence region of Franch and produced the impressionist work for which he is so well know.
Van Gogh had a theory that he could show the reality or intensity of the things that he painted with color.
He never sold a painting in his lifetime.

He was an expressionist painter or post-impressionist. He used the same colors as the impressionism painters, but his subjects had facial expressions, which is something the impressionist paintings lacked.
He used thick swirls in his brush strokes, which gave his work its uniqueness. It's believed that he used that technique to give his subjects movement or life.

his brother theo looked after him his whole life. he spent many years in an asylum.
impressionism - the style he painted in, was about using pure color, oft squeezed straight from the tube, to create an image which was disjointed on canvas and requires distance, and for your eyes to merge the colours together, as opposed to the older way of painting which was to be as realistic as possible.
