To JP,

Yiff

To all that are wondering,

My religion makes no claim of any life other than this one and believes that you should nurture this life in case it is your only chance. That is probably why I like my religion so much, it doesn't pretend to 'know' absolutly everything.

live for this life because maybe all that awaits us is a hole in the cold, damp ground. living for anything else is just wasteful as this is all we get.

I think you should live for both lives. Showing others the right way to live and that's with love, not stuffing religion down any ones throat, doing good for others and being the best person you can be. As for the next life, hopefully, because I accepted Christ as my savior I hope I get to go to heaven and live with God. This is what I am believing in.

Regardless of whether or not we have this one present life, an eternal afterlife, or countless other "recycled" lives, we should live life in whatever manner motivates us to be good people; respect yourself, respect others, respect the earth and those/that around us. Not a short order, for this world supplies ample mischief and wayward temptation.

Naturally, the one BEST suited to police us 24/7 is...well, our own selves. So...for most, it seems the "eternal Santa Claus" AKA "God" (be it the Christian one, Allah, etc.) is the necessary motivation to keep ourselves in check: He's always watching and you'll have an eternity of coal if you don't behave now. We humans tend to need to believe that there some sort of additional life (be it eternal or reincarnation) in order to police ourselves in this one, to behave in a way that allows social order, and to give ourselves some semblance of meaning to our present life.

If one studies religions/"God"(s) of various cultures, it becomes readily apparent how religion/definition of their deity/deities are shaped by the social needs of that particular society. Those studies also easily demonstrate how those ideals of "another/eternal life" are directly used to further that culture's ideals and many times, explain, maintain, and pacify the masses regarding many rather horrid social injustices.

Ideally, we should be able to handle being good and living in this life for that sake and that sake only. To be kind, generous, loving... but ALSO to find joy in this present life, to find meaning in the little things, and to be comfortable knowing that our time here is finite but by no means lacking value... However, if it means one needs to believe in a life after this one to accomplish that, well, that's okay. In the end, you are still just living this present life--and hopefully well.

(I don't know what religion it is which you follow, but in the belief of enjoying this life--again, not selfishly or foolishly--I agree with wholeheartedly!)

It is important that we live for this life. We need to look around us and appreciate all of the great things we have in this life, like Cheez-its, the light, delicious snack product with an irresistible, crunchy cheddar cheese flavor.

This life, because its all we have. Its the thinking that we have an after life and that this ones not important that truly terrify s me about religion.

We should live for the rich men who control all of us. They care about us, and want to give us free health care in the next life!

The next because this world and everything in it will pass away.

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

1Jo 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things [that are] in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

"Fading away like the stars in the morning
losing their light in the glorious sun
thus shall we pass from this earth and its toiling
only remembered for what we have done"

We are our deeds.

This life is good and we should live it to the full.
