This might happen in the future if we can make a tranquilizer that works %100 of the time and can be used at a distance. Cops and Guards only shoot to stop someone from a life-threatening situation; if there was another way to stop them I am positive it would be employed. Tasers work pretty well and, despite news stories, no one has been killed by one yet. I think that is why they are so popular.

Actually, they don't use either They use rubber bullets on a mob. Why? A tranquilizer is not harmless and injecting it can cause a slew of side effects. They don't ask you a bunch of questions at the dentist's office before they give you anestesia for nothing. INstead of putting you to sleep they can put you out of commission so to speak, for good. . If a cop fires a real bullet at a rowdy crowd, this cop will be vilified in the media and will be tried for that, even if his super told him to do that. That's how the liberal media works - the police must stop crime, but they cannot do anything about it because it's unethical. I guess this calls for magic skills, beacuse no physicall contact is allowed

Do you have any idea how long it takes for a tranquilliser to actually put the target to sleep?

A real bullet takes too long as it is unless a direct hit that disables the central nervous system is scored (hard to do).

If someone is coming at you with a weapon you want them on the ground before they get to you and simply put a real bullet comes closest to providing that capability to the cop or security guard. There have been a lot of advances in less lethal weapons but they also have their problems (e.g. Tasers are single shot devices) so unfortunately it is still necessary to give cops lethal weapons.

In a hostage situation it is especially important that the police have the ability to incapacitate the target instantly which is why police snipers want to be able to hit the brain stem.

It isn't about killing the person so much as ensuring that they don't pose a threat with any death of the target an unfortunate side effect (after being shot people typically will receive medical attention, the police aren't meant to be executioners).

Because tranquilizers are not instantly effective, and if you are employing such force instant is what you want.

If someone is coming after you with a knife; and they are closer than 20 feet from you, they will still be able to attack you even if you shoot them.

That gives you an idea how instant it has to be.

Tasers have reduced the instances of lethal force using firearms because it offers the officer other options.

It will be a great day when we can set our phasers on stun like Captain Kirk, but until then the firearm is still the safest bet.

A lot of cops are starting to carry tasers as well as guns. A cop is not a doctor and tranquilizers are drugs. Many people would die as a result of these drugs.

The technology and the agent does not exist anywhere but the minds of scifi authors. You deal with all types, ages, weights, med historties etc.... You need something that will supress an imminent threat immediately, and there are no agents available that are instantaneous, nowhere near fast enough to stop someone from pulling a trigger. That, and due to the wide range of weight / sizes, what might not be enough for a 275 lb biker could be a lethal dose for a 100 lb crackhead. See my point?

I wouldnt recommend that in Texas. Some of the people I know including myself are far better shooters than some of the officers. it only takes a millisecond of hesistation to be shot dead and its usually the cop who gets it. A tranqulizer takes a while to work making the situation as much hostile longer.

How about you fight a guy that is on PCP like I have before and see if a tranquilizer works better.

Because tranquilizers won't stop idiots on PCP like holes will.

It most likely would kill the suspect anyways.

They hold people down and inject them with Haldol in psychiatric hospitals. It doesn't do anything to me generally, besides make me pace the floor.
