Popsicles. That's what's helped my kids in the past. And chicken noodle soup. If you don't have any popsicles, try this. Mix some of koolaid or other of your favorite drink and pour it into an ice tray and let them partially freeze. Eat the slush with a spoon. Hope you feel better soon. Chloraseptic spray or something similar to numb your throat can offer relief, but it tastes crappy.

Oh, you poor thing! I totally understand! I have been there and done that, and yes, the pain is horrible!
I know that milk products are supposed to make it worse... but ice cream is the thing that always helped me. It doesn't help a lot with the hunger pains... but it kind of numbs the throat in an icy sort of way.

Night time is the worst time to be in pain. Everyone is sleeping and stores are closed.

When I have not had any tea, I've actually just heated up water and drank that! Same difference, only less flavor..

If you do have ice cream, then go for that. Then try and go to sleep while your throat is in that icy cold numb place...

Tomorrow, maybe your mom can go to the store and get tea, honey (I'm allergic to honey), jello, broth, and other good "get well" foods.

Here's hoping WITH you that you are feeling better soon!!

strep throat has to be one of the most painful illness to have when you're a kid. i had it back in high school and it was AWFUL!!! it hurts so bad.

unfortunately, there isn't much you can do to help the pain until the antiobiotics kick in. this will take about 24-48 hours.

i'm saddened that they didn't give you something to help with the pain (like tylenol with codeine-this is what i was given and it's a common pain reliever for strep).

gargling the salt water will help but you have to keep doing it. make sure the water is warm (but not hot enough to burn) and gargle for at least 30 seconds. 8oz of water and 2tsp of salt.

ice cream might help but it can also congest your throat making it worse. i would stick to clear liquids such as soup broth, jello, popsicles, juice or gatorade until the pain subsides. ice chips will help alot too.

if the pain becomes too much for you to take-then i say wake your mom and ask for some motrin. this might help some. you can take 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours.

i hope you feel better soon!!

In 30 years of treating Strep Pharyngitis the most effective remedy for throat pain has always been, warm salt water gargles. The problem is children don't like the taste and refuse to do it properly, and always say it doesn't help.

It really comes down to ...do you want to help yourself?

Do not use any milk products for at least 24 hours during a bacterial infection as this increases mucous thickening and increases throat pain. (this includes ice cream) you can suck on ice chips to sooth your throat if you like.

Start with jello and clear liquids, in the next 12 hours the pain should subside and you can move to other soft foods.

You need to go to a different ER, even if it means that you have to drive into another town.
Make sure you show them how much pain you are in through your body language. If you don't look like you're in extreme pain, then they're no going to give you anything. Have your mom tell the docs there about how much pain you've been in and what's been going on, i.e. not eating, vomiting, fever, etc.

Ice cream and ice water can help to alleviate some of the pain by reducing the inflammation. Once it settles some, I would suggest going for something more sustaining, such as soup or pudding.

Good luck, kid.

Gargle with warm salt water. Sea salt if you can. Not too much or you'll gag.
