It sounds like you've managed to break your screen somehow. This happened to me with my first digital camera.. I dropped it and the screen cracked and stayed black and white. Luckily, I had an optical view finder and by using that and software on my computer, I could still take and print beautiful pictures.
What you need to do is take your camera back to where you bought it. Even if you didn't purchase a warranty, the sales asscoiates will be able to help you and tell you what the likely problem is. Then, depending on your warranty (or lack there of), you will should be able to send the camera back to the manufacturer and get that part replaced. Worst case scenario, though, is that you didn't purchase a warranty and you have to pay for the camera to be fixed. If it can't be fixed, though, I would start saving up money and shop around for another camera. :(

Depending on the model, it may be subject to a recall. Older Canons had a bad sensor (made by Sony for Canon) that would fail. I would check with Canon to see if the subsequent recall covers your model.
Here's a link with more info on the bad sensors, listing the Canon cameras affected:

Do you have the display turned off? Look in your instruction book to see where to turn it on.
