I'm not quite sure where to begin this, but for some time now I've wanted to go to a country to help out some children who are not so fortunate. Maybe adopt (but NOT literally adopt) a child and buy them presents every year, etc, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions or know where to begin? I was thinking about WorldVision.org but I haven't heard such good things about them and I want the ability to visit the child I am donating to.

How about this : ANSWER THE ACTUAL QUESTION.
Where do you come up with "helping kids in America or the country next door" and who is to say that I haven't helped kids here in America? How do you know this isn't just another thing I'd like to do to help out the poor. Unless you know what you're talking about, shut up.

I'm wondering who you've heard these things about World Vision from? Lots of heresay turns into rumours turns into "facts", so find out if these people have first-hand experience or other credible sources, or passing on what they've "heard".

I've sponsored a child through World Vision for many years and are very happy with them. Also, I've volunteered overseas with them and seen several of their projects in countries in the Middle East and Africa. I've been impressed with what they are doing. They focus on trying to get a community to be self-sustaining, rather than forever relying on relief. You can also visit your child through them.

If you'd rather another organization, Plan International has a child sponsorship program as well. They're website is http://www.plan-international.org/ in the United States, and http://www.plancanada.ca in Canada.

You can also check out a charity's reputation at Charity Navigator, which is an independent source. They rate each one, and provide financial details for American-based charities. Their website is http://www.charitynavigator.org As well, other similar resources are http://www.guidestar.org and http://www.us.bbb.org/

Here's an idea:

Global Vision International

or you could always "adopt" a child in the U.S. via
Big Brothers, Big Sisters

How about the country next door; or your own country. Why is it that people want to keep going overseas to the same places many thousands have been before, and failed, instead of getting in their cars and going somewhere local to help. Go to a local orphanage or childs hospital and become a hero in your own neighbourhood.

While this is a nice thing I often wonder why people don't try in this country first. By no means am I trying to dampen your spirit. I am semi aware that it tends to be alittle easier to adopt or help kids in other countries alot of times.
