My 4 yr old sis, 11 yr old brother, and 13 yr old brother and I have grown up with pets our entire lives and it's worked out perfectly.
Please don't get a dog just because your kid and the animal would look cute together. YOU need to really want this and be sure that you are going to be able to care for this animal it's entire life.
Most dogs love kids, but some dogs have had bad experiences with them and dislike/are aggressive towards them. A puppy raised with a child usually works out great.
Make sure your ask the breeder/humane society workers if the dog is good with kids or not. Bring your child to meet the dog before your bring it home.
Make sure the first month or so, you supervise your child's time spent with the dog. Make sure she doesn't play too rough with the dog, and that she isn't grabbing, pulling, or poking him in the eyes and such.
Remember that it is stressful for a dog to be transfered to a completely different environment so he may take some time to feel comfortable.
My lovely Golden Retriever growled at my little sis the first few times she was climbing on him (when we first got him), but now he is very loving and tolerable.
Give your dog some time to adjust before you let your child play with him and stuff.
You can find tons of books about introducing a dog into your home at the library.
I hope this helps!

Be careful about introducing a baby into a household with a dog. My parents got a dachshund shortly before I was born and from day 1, this dog couldn't stand me. I could not walk into a room without being growled at and if I got too close, this dog would try to bite me. I spent nearly a decade doing my best to keep my distance from this animal. I have to admit that when it died, I was more relieved than sad.

I think it CAN work. You've got to do the research: get a dog that will fit your lifestyle as you live it NOW, not as you imagine you would live if you had a dog. Try to find a breed that only needs the exercise you can give it, is known to be adaptable to kids and other pets, sheds at a rate you can keep clean, etc.

i think of the class element sounds quite cool. i could do all forms of pets (with possible limited coping with through age), and make it as educational as possible. issues like coaching approximately 'good pets' (i.e. pets that are top for them). Many young ones say 'i'm getting a macaw while i'm older"...yet don't understand that a macaw ought to survive them and can be very needy shielding animals. you additionally can prepare them appropriate care of diverse forms of pets, prepare approximately diverse training of pets (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, bugs and spiders). in case you have a knowledgeable dogs it particularly is cool to enable the babies see the thank you to coach an animal and function the animal do some tricks with the dogs, coaching of valuable reinforcement. In my Human/Animal Relationships class we did a neat little test with clicker training. We had a million individual be the instructor and a million the trainee. We then despatched the trainee out of the room the place they could no longer pay attention and we mutually picked something we mandatory the instructor to coach the trainee (clapping palms, leaping on a million foot, touching nostril, etc...). Then the trainee got here decrease back in and the only element the instructor ought to do is click the clicker while the trainee did something on the brink of what we've been searching for, with a bit of luck finally gaining understanding of the element we actually desire them to do (trainee could no longer communicate, in basic terms click). This exhibits how clicker training works and how puzzling it particularly is for animals to renowned what we desire of them. I additionally like that regulation of wanting an person. i does not desire to sell a puppy to a newborn with out one hundred pc adults consent (confirm there) for the pets sake. If the youngster is paying for a puppy and the confirm doesnt know and needs the youngster to get rid of the puppy, the puppy frequently finally ends up being set unfastened to who is familiar with what and are frequently unique species to the section. mothers and dads could desire to understand the reasoning for the regulation....it particularly is often greater acceptable to be secure than sorry.

don't be fooled by the look so cute together thing it rarely works out that way. my son is 2 1/2 and we recently got a puppy. the dog is not aggressive or nippy at all but is a puppy. my son who has always been very good with animals has figured out a good way to get mommy and daddy's attention is to keep putting his hand in the dogs face until the dog playfully bites him then say owwww mommy kiss it all better. i know he isn't hurt but it gets old trying to tell him don't hit the dog in the face and he wont bite you. it is double aggravation bc we are trying to teach the dog not to bite. he also likes to wait until the dog is in my lap and then get up there and put him in a head lock so the dog flips out and scratches the crap out of me trying to get down. we got the dog as a family pet so we are happy with him but its allot more work then cute. plus is we know what to expect when we have another child mommmm the one month old baby hit me lol

My Husbands Family and half of mine have really bad cat allergies, which Ironicly my Husband is also allergic and we have 2 cats, My son was at a great risk for the allergies, but we have had the cats since before he was born, and nothing he beats them up and rips their fur out, and no problems, and the cats like him too!! So I really do think that if you own animals when they are younger it helps to combat the allergies, just like the allery shots they have out, they get rid of your allergies by injecting you with the allergen once a week for 2 years and when the 2 years is up, it is supposed to be gone.

I think dogs and kids are good together, it gives them a responsibility. I also have a chiuauaua, and if you have breathing problems, ect, they have something in their hair that makes you breath easy durning the night. If you are worried about a dog, maybe get her a fish and see how she does with it first
