Migraine pain is caused by vasodilation in the cranial blood vessels (expansion of the blood vessels), while headache pain is caused by vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels). During a migraine, inflammation of the tissue surrounding the brain, i.e., neurogenic inflammation, exacerbates the pain.
Often migraines are one sided, and commonly common headaches are bilateral (hurt on both sides), but this is not requireds. A one sided headache can be a common headache if no other symptoms of migraine are present.
I hope this information is what you were looking for!

Leslie J is on to something...Sometimes blood vessels around your head dilate and start pressing on the nerves. So yes, coldness can help. I have also heard that caffiene can help with this type of headache.
Eyestrain and bad posture can cause headaches. It is important to have your eyes checked out every 1-2 years. Also, be sure to take frequent breaks throughout the day to give your back (and eyes) a rest. Get up and do stretches to your neck and back. Stress and dehydration can also cause headaches.
OTC pain medications such as ibuprophen and naproxen are a start. Pain medication is something that can help you to cope with the pain. Try heat on the area or even ice.
Chiropractic care can sometimes be beneficial. My chiro says 90% of his patients that have headaches, benefit from his care. Unfortunately it didn't do anything for me, but everyone is different. Acupuncture and massage therapy can definitely prove to be benficial when it comes to pain.
There are even vitamins and minerals that can help with a headache. Those include Valarien Root (for tension headaches) Fever Few, magnesium, and B2.
If you have tried all this and still have a headache, it is a good idea to go see a doctor. They can try and pinpoint what is wrong, and rule out any scary stuff. They can put you on stronger pain meds and even give you preventative meds.
And although it is hard to do when you are hurting, diet and exercise are a great thing to prevent headaches.

There is no way to permanently cure headaches unless you find the source of the headache. It can be caused by many reasons. Maybe you need to be checked out by a doctor. It could be stress?? sleeping habits?? high blood pressure?? poor posture?? migraine?? some indirect cause also?? It would be very hard to say unless you were questioned--with answers--as to the cause and even then, a reason might not be found. Sorry.

Headaches hurt because your blood vessels tighten up and that causes pressure on the nerves. What causes the blood vessels to do that. Not sure. It can be stress or other pains in the body. Straining the eyes can cause that too. There are several reasons. If your headaches become more intense or you start to have vision problems, see your doctor immediately!!!!!

I think it's that the blood vessels around your head dilate and start pressing on the nerves. That's why a cold pack can be a good way to treat a headache - the coldness constricts the blood vessels back down to their normal size and away from the nerves.

Excess or deficiency of body energies inflame the nerves.
The inflamed nerves get swelling and it causes pressure on delicate calls of brain causing pains.
There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES,
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy and the BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.
Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.
For forehead pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.
It may disappear naturally too.

I had been told it was the opposite, the blood vessel shrink , sending messages to the brain"help I need more oxygen'' causing pain.
the cold helps re-open them. it just makes sense.
