it is usually better to buy wild fish because they have not been given anything that will make them grow bigger or anything like that but if you shop at whole foods the farm raised fish have been watched and not given anything that is harmful to them....whole foods has high standards that they hold their vendors too and if they don't adhere it can't be sold at whole foods. so to answer your question both can be good it just depends on where you buy them from.

Levels of mercury are the main issue with fish. I always thought that farm raised fish were better but I was told by someone in that department of the supermarket that some farm raised can actually have more mercury than wild fish so I'm still not sure if it's true or not. I'll try to research it some more and get back to you.

Depends.......

Farm raised fish are usually cheaper and easier to find (ie Tilapia). However; improper farming methods can destroy the environment (much like their plant counterparts). When you farm fish, you put a huge amount of a single species in a space they were not designed to occupy soley and this will have negative effects; both on the fish and the environment.

Wild fish (ie Salmon) are usually more expensive since supply is not controlled. Also since you do not know where they spawn, you do not know what contaminants they have. Here in the US, there are several areas where fish have a high mercury content that they advise pregnant women to refrain from eating them. There is also the fishing method. Fishing trawlers that catch tuna sometimes also catch dolphins in their nets. The dolphins die because they cannot surface to breath. This has led to boycotts of tuna and "dolphin safe" brand tuna.

My advise is, look at the particular species of fish you are interested in eating. Find out where it is from. Find out how it is farmed or caught. I know in the Philippines, red tide is usually a concern during the rainy season so during this time, you might look for wild fish. Best bet, eat the local fish. You are supporting the economy. I'll take the local Bangus and Tilapia over Salmon and Trout any day....

Well both have their benefits:

Wild fish nowadays contain high mercury levels

Raised fish are OKAY fish, not too good, not too bad.

I would probably buy raised fish, because they may have some health benefits.

There is however one case where I would buy wild fish over raised fish, and that is if the wild fish came from Alaska or somewhere up north, near fresh, cold water. (They are the healthiest).

If you just "like" fish, - farm raised is fine. But if you LOVE fish (the way I LOVE Shrimp), wild fish are the way to go. If you REALLY love it- you can tell the Difference... :)
