Though I walk through the valley of death I shall fear no evil for I am the baddest MF in the valley! When its my time its my time! I will fight against any injustice that I feel is great enough for me to fight against without worrying about repercussions! TOO DUMB TO BE SCARED, TOO MEAN TO CARE! If its worth fighting for its worth dying for!

Each person must answer this one for themselves, and they frequently will not know the answer to that until they face the situation in reality.
I have fortunatley never had to use my martial arts skills in this way, but I have certainly stood up for and defended those under duress or victimized by others - and if needed, I would most definatley use my skills if the need and situation arose and I deemed it appropriate to do so.
The worry of repercussions such as those you discuss is rare in the extreme unless you live in a gang ridden neighborhood and you are contemplating interceding in a gang problem. Most of us are not in this situation, and in most cases such a repercussion would not occur. You must ask youself the question though, would you risk such a repercussion to do what you believe to be right, true, and proper? Personally, I would.

Defending the weak is how some refer to it as do I. Actually though that is just a short way of saying that it is someones mother, father, little sister, or little brother or maybe someones grandparent and I would hope that someone out there would help mine if they needed it against those that would prey upon them or do them harm. As for people and guns and those that prey upon others they sooner or later get caught and justice is served and if not in this life then it will be in the next one. Anyone that brings a gun to deal with me probably lives in a world filled with more fear, misery, and trouble than mine and has to worry more about that than me so no-I don't worry about it.

To live in fear is to not really live at all...
How about this for a thought... Do you know the attackers? Do they know you? If the answer to both of these questions is no then how are they going to find you anyway? If the answer is yes then you will know if it worth the risk to get involved. Personally I can't help myself I would step in if someone was in trouble but I would only fight as a last resort, often just someone realising that there is someone else there that cares is enough to stop them.

Now the other question. How many martial artists answering are dead? Not a sarcastic or fecetious comment. To be Bushido one must consider themselves already dead and live correctly.

I am bound by an oath I took way back in the day,
"To use my skills to defend myself and others less able"
"One should seek to do the right thing at every opportunity, this is what defines ones character"

Yes I would defend others who can't defend themselves. It was part of my oath when I began my studies.
The likelihood of someone coming back and shooting me are HIGHLY unlikely unless you're in an environment that is routine and one is likely to be there again in the near future.
That's not the case for most of us. Even if it were it wouldn't change my stance and it hasn't changed it in my past.

It is the duty of the strong to protect those who need it - it is for this reason that true strength is sought and developed, for strength without heart and honor is no strength at all; only a paper tiger waiting to be blown carelessly this way and that by the first gust of passing wind.

In defence of a child or the elderly without hesitation without warning .
However there are instances where you shouldn't stick your nose in.A freind of mine tryed to save a woman who had recieved a few slaps from her husband/boy friend whatever and they got into it.Next thing he knows she is on his back trying to claw his eyes while he fought with the guy.
When the police came they both accused him of starting the whole thing had a hell of a time proving otherwise courts lawyers the whole 9 yards.
