I used to think the same way, but ah, started drinking...
There are some particular good tasting drinks that you could have and not realize there is alcohol in them. Generally, there's something similar without alcohol in it, though.
I've acquired a taste for beer and wine, though. A good beer is something you cannot make without alcohol (I'm talking about microbrews here, not the mass market stuff). There are some mediocre non-alcoholic wines, but not too much that's really like the traditional wine. Since wine is notably more alcoholic than beers (usually, my wine has 2x more alcohol as my beer, which is usually about 50-100% more alcoholic than the mass market light beers), you really do get a feeling of the alcohol in it (sorta warming in your esophagus and stomach), which you can't have with non-alcoholic wines.
Cocktails are a whole different story. Most of these taste pretty good, if you're making them you get to figure out what you like, but you probably wouldn't like them to start with, though I liked the vodka drinks I started with, since I used the good stuff. The cheap stuff I immediatley noticed tasted like crap, which was probably because it was 100 proof.
My theory on shots is you don't drink them because they taste good in any way. With the quick action of drinking them, then having a chaser, you've already implied they taste bad. I've never done shots, but have sipped on a glass of scotch neat, no water, with no real problems.
Basically, you can easily drink beer and wine and cocktails (if they include something non-alcoholic - coke, juice) for taste and not get drunk. You might get buzzed, just because you like the drink too much ;) But with shots, you're drinking it for a quick drunk, no question about it.

Taste good? - Maybe to the equivalent of rancid toilet water.
Why? I can not speak for others. But I used to drink and the reason I drank is because it was easier to get drunk and mute the hurt than to step through it - I am now forced to face the fact of being an emotional coward at that point in my life, but truth is truth.
Drinking alcohol only slips a person deeper into their hurts and fears to a place of even greater weakness. It is simply like painting over dirt!
When we confront hurt and fear to the point that only one walks away we come out the other end to see that those same hurts and fears have become new strengths.
Even if it is not used abusively it is still poison to our bodies and hell on our minds.
If you want to know what you're missing just have a look at the obituary and police reports in your local paper.
Now if you would just remove that word "yet" :)

Yes they are great but in moderation.
The taste and the sensation are but good points if you know when to stop. Getting oblivious and having a bad hangover is not much fun. Getting nicely buzzed is great.
Booze has a much more sophisticated palate than most drinks, has a history that goes back thousands of years into pre-history and is fun. Many cultures social activities are based around drinking especially in Northern Europe, UK Germany, Holland, Scandinavia etc, not drinking in these countires is very unusual.

I don't drink to get drunk. I don't care if I get buzzed, but I've never been drunk and I won't ever get drunk. I do like the taste of beer, and hard liquor. But I don't like wine at all unless it's a red wine that's so dry that it feels like it's sucking the moisture out of your body. But I almost never drink wine. Alot of people do hate the taste of beer and alot o hard liquors, but really do like mixed drinks. There are alot of mixed drinks you can try until you really like a specific one. It's all a matter of personal taste. I really like a Long Island Ice Tea with anything that I eat.
Just a useless fact, I read some studies that showed that ZIMA original actually tastes exactly like Zebra urine to human taste buds.

Some of them taste too good which is why people can down so many of them.
People like drinking for the feeling of freedom. It is a good feeling, but the downside can be the hangover or getting yourself into trouble if you drink too much.
All in all, you aren't missing much. Next time you are around someone who is drinking, just watch how ugly their face starts to get after a few drinks. It's like everyone's eyes hang and they look older and swollen. Not sexy!!!

they do it so they can get buzzed. For the most part people dont drink alcoholic beverages for the taste. If you have never had a beer, you dont know what youre missing. You should knock down a couple beers in under 5 min, you might change you mind about how "dumb" it is to get an artificial buzz.

My Father was an Alcoholic, He could not leave it alone, He tried many times.*He died of a failing liver* My best advice is to leave it alone, don't even think you are missing anything " You are not" I have drank a few drinks and I had a terrible head-ache and a so called hang-over. Its not worth it.
I have read where some folks crave the taste, but to me it did not taste good and I do not need a buzz or a high to live life to the fullest.

nooo...like beer...is gross. Well in my opinion it is. Everyone says it's an 'acquired' taste. Yeah right. Mixed drinks aren't too bad. But they aren't that great. I'm not a big drinker...I think most do it cuz it's the 'thing to do and to get a buzz or get drunk!

I enjoy some alcohol, yes. But some of it is nasty..and I only drink the ones I like. I don't really believe in drinking to purely get drunk.

yes, they do, and are very enjoyable in moderation. But you have to stop when you start feeling "buzzed" because then you'll get hungover and that is THE WORST. Whatever you drink, just have two. Then you'll enjoy it, and yes some of them are delicious, mostly cocktails.
