I have a high-end XC bike that I love, but it cannot handle any tires wider than 2.1. I'd like to have a nice American made bike that can handle really wide tires (2.4+). Trek hardtails are preferable.

Look at the Puglsey... I think it can take tires as wide as 4"...

Now, more realistically, I don't think that XC hardtails will accept tires as wide as 2.4.

I have a Banshee Viento and I have put a 2.2" with plenty of room for a wider tire. It can also take forks from 100mm to 160mm, so you can vary the bike with different forks. It's not the lightest bike out there, but a good option.
