This is a moral/ethical question. Is this person a friend? Then it shouldn't matter if you aren't in a serious relationship. You should be honest. I don't think dishonesty is ever ok in relationships, unless you're sparing the truth to spare their feelings, but even then... how do you know how they'll react or feel or interpret the news?
So, to answer your question, the truth ALWAYS matters.

Sometimes, your mind tells you that you need to bend the story in order to make the situation work out in your interest whereas just speaking the truth may work even better for you. You may find out that the thing you're fearing could happen by being completely honest doesn't and it would happen instead when you bend the story...

It feels good to let something out and not have it kept hidden to yourself. I guess the truth does matter. The person might give it a thought.

It shouldn't matter if it's a relationship or not. You should be honest with everyone you encounter.
