I want to buy a new Bible for my boyfriend for Christmas, and I'm looking for one for myself. I'd prefer the New International Version. What do you recommend? I'm looking more for a specific Bible recommendation. For example, I've had the "Teen Study Bible" printed by Zondervan since 8th grade. I'm ready for an update. Perhaps something with a concordance?

Depends on what your looking for readability definately the Message... really good but if you want good readability and really accurate translation use NRSV but the best again go for the message... stay away from KJV it was written hundreds of years ago and unless your well versed in old english it will take alot of learning, but again get the Message and don't listen to anybody saying that any one version is the only "valid" one they've been brain washed by fundimentalists
EDIT: if you had the student bible for a while get the NIV study bible from zondervan if you want to keep with what you've been used too, but still the message with the paraphraseing makes it read more like a story and less like a text book

Do the Bible's book of Romans. Use the Bible to teach the Bible -- then it's God's Word and not someone else's.

I have The Student Bible, New International Version (NIV). I find it helpful because it has different reading tracks, overviews, background and short commentaries/stories that make you think about different situations that arise in the Bible. It's easy to read and I really like it. Mine is leather but on amazon they have paperback for sure. Leather with his name engraved on it might be nicer for a present though. But a Bible is a Bible either way you slice it.

Whatever you do, don't get a study Bible. They include theological notes that color your interpretation.
NASB is good, NIV is fine. It depends upon what the purpose of the gift is. If you want him to read it for spiritual and theological purposes, KJV is your worst option because he doesn't speak the same dialect and will misunderstand half of it. If it's for literary value, KJV is the best because it is the most widely referenced. I suspect it's the former, so NIV or NASB.

Im a catholic so I'll suggest catholic versions
1. if you want the poetic type go for New American Bible or the Community Bible
2. if you want the more literal translation ( this is the one they use for studying the bible) - use RSV or if they are out of stock the NRSV. By the way, RSV and NRSV are accepted by Protestants as well

I only read the King James Version. I don't want any mistakes when it comes to reading the Bible. I think this would be a nice Christmas gift. I hope this helps you.

NIV Adventure Bible.
I recommend this as a good starter Bible for anyone, no matter their age. It is easy to get through and has interpretations. Whether or not he would be offended by you getting him a teenage Bible -- well, you would know that answer. :-)

NIV is a good modern lang Bible. king james version (contrary to the other person) is very Old English, thees and thous. new king james is my personal favorite because its simpler than KJV and not as modernly worded (is that a phrase? =]) so its like an in betweener. the message = bad news. too much paraphrasing.
