The spirit/soul retain consciousness after death.
Jesus Christ made this abundantly clear:
"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
" 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "
Luke 16:19-31
He also taught the body would one day follow in resurrection:
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
"Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned."
John 5:24-29

Invisible, electrical in nature. Can be downloaded by whoever runs the show. Everything you ever experienced from your time in the womb to death is in there, every thought you had, everything you ever tasted or smelled, everything you ever done in the dark and thought no-one was watching, you were right, nobody was watching but somebody will watch after you die. Against this you will be judged and if you lived your life right, you get to move on to the next level. Failure to live life properly will send you right back to Earth until you get it right. There is a conspiracy theory regarding the medical world where it's believed they know about the soul, in that if you weigh someone prior to death and again just after there is always a difference and it's always the same weight diff, can't remember the figure, it's something like 7kg. Some people believe the departed soul is the reason for the difference. Some UFOlogists believe the grey aliens have some involvement with our souls. The ones involved in abductions. Infact the aliens claim to be responsible for looking after it but also claim to be working on behalf of someone else. As wild as it seems, this story when you have digested all the points of it makes more sense than anything Christianity has to say about it. Another point regarding grey aliens is that they say they do not know who created the universe either.

No, according to the Bible the body or a person is the soul and when the body or person dies so does the soul(Genesis2:7 ;Ezekiel18:4) so the soul cannot live on after deathnor can a dead person communicate with the living because a dead person knows nothing or is not conscious of anything(Ecclesiastes9:5) But that does not mean that death is the end of all hope!In fact the Bible tells us that all in tombs will be resurrected back to life(John5:28,29)

The concept of a soul and what becomes of the soul after death is based on one's own religious beliefs. Some faiths do not believe in a "soul" while others believe the soul leaves the body upon death. Some faiths believe that the soul is eternal and returns to the Creator upon death thus the concept that life is eternal.
Since the soul is not something one can touch or see, there is no tangible evidence that the soul is eternal. The soul is something that is unique to each individual, and what they believe about the soul and after life is based on their individual and religious beliefs.
For additional information or discussion, I would suggest a meeting with a local theologian or religious leader within their local community.

Eccl. 9:10: “All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol [“the grave,” KJ, Kx; “the world of the dead,” TEV], the place to which you are going.”
What is the condition of the dead?
Eccl. 9:5: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.”
Ps. 146:4: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts [“thoughts,” KJ, 145:4 in Dy; “all his thinking,” NE; “plans,” RS, NAB] do perish.”
1 Cor. 15:45: “It is even so written: ‘The first man Adam became a living soul.’ The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.” (So the Christian Greek Scriptures agree with the Hebrew Scriptures as to what the soul is.) (The Greek word here translated “soul” is the accusative case of psy·khe′. KJ, AS, Dy, JB, NAB, and Kx also read “soul.” RS, NE, and TEV say “being.”)
1 Pet. 3:20: “In Noah’s days . . . a few people, that is, eight souls, were carried safely through the water.” (The Greek word here translated “souls” is psy·khai′, the plural form of psy·khe′. KJ, AS, Dy, and Kx also read “souls.” JB and TEV say “people”; RS, NE, and NAB use “persons.”)
Gen. 9:5: “Besides that, your blood of your souls [or, “lives”; Hebrew, from ne′phesh] shall I ask back.” (Here the soul is said to have blood.)
Josh. 11:11: “They went striking every soul [Hebrew, ne′phesh] that was in it with the edge of the sword.” (The soul is here shown to be something that can be touched by the sword, so these souls could not have been spirits.)

I believe the mind is imprinted upon the soul. The soul moves on and the body is only a vehicle which no longer as a purpose.

I have no real evidence or personal experience. I have hope but that's about it. Words on paper, backed by my belief in them at whatever level that may be does not change the fact that I nor anyone else does.
Edit: If there is a part of us that is not of this body why does it stay with us our entire life? Why aren't there zombies? What does that mystical non part of us do while we sleep?

None of these live on after death in any way that is significant to the deceased. Ok sure, we become part of the living body of worms, but I doubt that's what you meant.

Soul is a speacial word for the mental body, it does not live in or exit our body. After we die, so does the mental body.

the soul moves on to either heaven or hell. the body decays as in nature, or thru cremation i guess. a person does have a body mind and soul. mind, as in brain, decays with the body, and mind as in your thoughts, i guess it stays with your soul.
