The Archdiose of New York has said that they will distribute the free tickets through their parishes, but no other details are available yet for the April visit.

You should call the Papal Visit Office for more info:

I did ask the same question a few days ago! :)

And from what I have been told and read, the Archdiocese of New York will have the tickets at the parishes. And they are free!

I'm definitely going to try to go!

Mass isn't until April 20, 2008 ( http://411newyork.org/forum/index.php?act=calendar&cal_id=1&code=showevent&event_id=3 ) so no need to worry right now plus tickets are free.

You won't be able to get them from Ticketron but they will make sure that sure tickets are available for worshippers inside (and also outside) the diocese.
