you should know how many miles you get to the gallon ... work out how many miles you drive how many gallons of gas that would be ... and add a little for wear and tear on your car as well.
Freeloaders ... we'd all be better off without them

Girl are you too nice!
No. It's not just the $3.75 per gallon for gas, it's your transmission, engine, wear and tear of your car and tires, not to mention how tedious it is for you. You are priviliged to have a car and friends?
Yes, if there are 3 friends going, I would say pitch in $7 each. Driving around that much and at their pleasure, is not all fun and games. Not only are they pitching in for your gas, but you'll have a little extra for a meal. It's not just about the gas, you know, they should be paying up for gas and your lunch without being asked!!
Now, if they don't have a car of their own, or a job to pay for their expenses how can they pay you? Just wondering. Unless their parents pay for their expenses.

Just be honest and tell them the situation. Your money tree in the back yard is empty. You don't mind driving them around, but the lack of help filling the tank may put a halt to it in the near future. Don't beat around the bush, just tell them nicely, or stop offering all together.
$5.00 each for the weekend would be a fair amount, considering gas, your time, car upkeep, etc.

Are you inviting them to go with you? Or are they begging a ride off you? If they are asking you to cart them around, then yes, they should pitch in, on the other hand if you invited them, that's not quite the same.
If you invite a friend over for dinner, do you ask them to pay for half the groceries?
If you think it's appropriate for your situation to ask for gas money, then figure out about how many miles you travel, and about what it costs and divy it up amonst you. I'd say about $3-5 per person.

You should definitely say something, but say it nicely! Point out the price of gas at a gas station and say, "hey guys, if you could pitch in $10 to feed this beast I would really appreciate it"
Most good friends will gladly help out. If not, drop them off at the nearest bus stop.

Maybe next time they ask to be driven ( the next time you and your friends are making plans to drive around), just say something like "oh cr@p, Im broke and no gas, guess we cant go). They may offer up some gas money. They likely just havent thought about it ( especially if they dont drive). good-luck.

the time to mention is is BEFORE the outing, when arrangements are being make for you to pick them up etc.
you just say "i can drive, but i can't pay for the gas this time" or
"i'm willing to drive if each person kicks in $3 for gas" or
"i'm happy to drive my car but it's on empty and we won't get far unless the riders cough up gas money. can you help with that?"
then when you have them just drive straight to the gas station and have them buy the gas. tell them how many miles your car gets per gallon and figure out how far you are going to drive (or by time) and divide it by how many people are in the car.
just make it clear up front that the fun hang out driving in your car isn't going to happen because you aren't willing to foot the bill for the gas. don't wait for them to offer.
the key is say it in advance. don't lie. just say
"i can drive but i need help with gas tonght"
and say it every time from now on.
make the amount definite, not just whatever they are willing to pay. figure it out somehow by mileage or flat rate.
remember - say it BEFORE arrangements are made for hanging out so they have a choice.
some may choose not to come because of that.

I've never been offended when a friend asks for gas money. I try to pay them anyway, but when I've had to be reminded, it was fine. A real friend will apologize and say sorry, I wasn't thinking.
$5-10 sounds about right.

Five to ten dollars each is reasonable enough. Gas is not cheap.
