I have been on the antibiotic regime for about... 5 days now, and finally, i forgot to take it at a certain time, and ate. after that, i had like, a slight pain where my wisdom tooth had been extracted, but i had rinsed with warm salt water before that. when i finally realized i missed one, i instantly took the antibiotics. what im wondering is, is it possible that i may get an infection when i forgot to take my antibiotics? cause the spot where the tooth was taken out is a bit itchy now, after i took the meds. and whats with the syringe? i never got one... whats it for?

it really depends on the length of time in between when you should have taken the antibiotic and when you actually did

if you took it the same day I don't see why you'd get an infection in that period of time, chances are the infection was already on it's way and it might not even be an infection

i've been to the doctors countless time for my wisdom teeth over the last year, If i feel pain i always give it a day or two to take care of itself, but it the pains keep going then i go to the dentists.

rinse with salt water, avoid foods that make painful crumbs (corn chips are a nightmare when a sharp crumb gets caught at the back) clean your teeth well, especially at the area at the back (i usually clean it till it bleeds but that's just me) and take some codeine maybe for the pain

if you're still concerned give the doctor a call and describe the sensation you're feeling

I had my Wisdom teeth out in June. It was a worst case scenario. 4 horizontally impacted wisdom teeth removed at once, 2 resulting in dry socket. I was on prescription pain killers all day, every day for 3 weeks.

Anyways, an infection is always possible, but quite unlikely. Continue taking the antibiotics. If there is an infection, they should kill it off pretty quickly. Secondly, if the only thing you have to say about the socket is that it's a bit itchy, consider yourself lucky. Bit itchy > Mind numbing pain. Lastly, the little plastic syringe is for cleaning bits of food out from the socket. It's incredibly useful, and I would have asked for one from the start. However, if you rinse with salt water regularily, you shouldn't have any problems.

It's OK don't panic. You did the right thing by taking the antibiotic dose that you missed. The spot where the tooth was is still raw and can still hurt. It'll take a little longer for the wound in the gum to heal. I suspect the dentist would've told you to take a pain killer if you have pain (unless you are allergic to pain killers). The injection is an anesthetic to dull the pain before extraction. I am surprised you weren't given one when you had the tooth out.

The pain will subside, trust me. I spent many hours on the dentist chair.

If you have an "itch" where the tooth was extracted, you are healing fine.
Missing one dose of an Antibiotic won't make a difference, because the medicine builds up in your system.
the syringe is just another way to clean out the temporary "hole" left after the tooth extraction.

You're not going to get an infection from being late on a dose of antibiotics. I'd make sure that the area is kept really clean and finish your meds as directed. If you start to experience additonal pain, see your physician. BTW, Itching is often a sign of healing.

I just got my wisdom teeth pulled. You should be very careful to take the anibiotics, but if you miss one time i am sure you are fine. You should have gotton a syringe because it cleans out the holes with water and keeps it from filling with food. Your should go back to your oral surgeon first thing if you think you have an infection

The usual course of penicillin is 5 days - two weeks seems a long time. You are unlikely to get an infection. When you have completed the course make sure you eat plenty of live yogurt - the antibiotic kills off the good bacteria in the gut as well as the baddies and the yogurt will help to put them back.

I think you should be fine. I'm sure that when I got my wisdom teeth pulled I forgot to take an antibiotic or two and I didn't get an infection.

syringe is for irrigation, missing one pill should not be a problem, the discomfort you are experiencing is like normal and you are healing.
