I don't consider myself a cookie-cutter, right-wing, Bible-thumping, fundamentalist Christian (in fact, quite the contrary), but even I take issue with a lot of what Bishop Spong says and writes. His positions and suggestions about the faith bear no resemblance to Christianity as I know it and as most of the world knows it. I don't accept his argument that Christianity "as we know it" is untenable and must be fully revamped and modernized in order to make sense in the modern world. To do so, I think, would be to strip Christianity of all of its essential and defining features and leave us with nothing but feel-good mushiness.

I read a little of his work, not very much at all. I did not agree with him on several things. I do not believe that you have to excuse the sin of homosexuality for you to feel good about God, for instance. I think that God knows fully well that we are sinners. We have no excuse, only forgiveness if we trust Him through Jesus Christ. Sponge seemed to miss this.

Yes, there are lots of good Christians who love Bishop Spong. I like his message, but I disagree with his understanding of traditional Christian theology.

Hey, Guns. I like a lot of his new ideas and ways of thinking, but he certainly takes the "magic" out of it.

I believe he teaches a lot of heresy. Compare what he says to the Bible and you'll see he falls shorts all over the place. Please read the links below.
