Is it just me or are people generally becoming more oblivious to everything around them? I could list pages of examples that I've noticed recently, but to sum it up, whether it's the person at the movies talking on their cell phone, the guy at the checkout counter who's trying to pay with one hand while holding the cell phone with the other, or the person driving 20 MPH less than everyone else, a vast number of people seem to be to busy "starring in their own movie" to realize how ridiculously loud and rude they are being.

Unless you are a Doctor on call, do you really need to have that conversation right then and there? It's almost guaranteed that you cannot go to any gathering of people whether its social, work related, school related, religous, etc... and not have at least 1 cell phone go off! It's happened at every wedding and funeral I've been to. Is there any chance places will start banning non-emergency cell phone usage... or is the problem the PERSON, not the phone???

Oh yes, the Walkie-Talkie phones are the worst... and don't even get me started on the various ringtones set on the loudest setting!

The problem is not the phone, it is the person. More and more people are acting as though the world revolves around them. We are able to talk to our friends anytime, anywhere. As a result, people think they NEED to have those conversations, even at the most inappropriate times. It's the price we pay for having everything at our fingertips.

Several of the communities around my major city have banned cell phone use while driving.

Once my cell phone went off during class, and that was enough for me! I never even brought the thing to class after that, in case I forgot to turn it off.

People do need to realize that the world does not revolve around them. Driving while on a cell phone should be illegal, I'm all for that. I wish they'd make it illegal in my city. I see too many drivers driving worse than drunk drivers while they're on their phone.

Today I was in a nice restaurant, and there were 2 women at a table, both having separate conversations on their phones! Come on people, just have some manners.

You sound like me. I couldn't have put it any better. There's no reason at all for people to be using a cell phone everywhere. I saw a woman walk right into traffic today because she was on her cell phone. She's lucky she wasn't run over.

There apparently are devices that will immobilize the phones in a given area. I read about it in the NY Times last week, and they are becoming ever more popular as more of us get fed up.

I agree when in places like restaurants and waiting rooms, checkout lines and so many other places they should be off or at least the user should respect others. But I do let them know! Just as the non smokers I respect and do not smoke by them. We have banned them at work. The problem lies in the users not the phones....Guns don't kill people do....phones aren't rude people are.....and one more thing...Don't you just hate those damn walkie talkie phones...Now you hear Both sides...

Well I don't like hearing someone else's conversation on their phone within earshot but what annoys me the most are people driving down the road while on their phones and not paying attention to traffic around them.

I'm right with you! I've been in the ER, (I am a Chaplain and Retired RN), we have had cells go off and patients going nuts because we take them away. I have to now ask to have cell phones off for my weddings and funerals. Geepers.....thank you for putting my personal gripe on line! Blessings, Chaplain Debby
