(Ecclesiastes 9:5-6) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.
We remain ' asleep' in death, conscious of nothing...just like sleep...
(Psalm 13:3) Do look [upon me]; answer me, O Jehovah my God. Do make my eyes shine, that I may not fall asleep in death,

Well... Hell is not currently a real place. We have neither a spirit nor a soul -- in the spiritual sense. We *are* a living soul -- we don't *have* one (Gen. 2:7; 1Cor. 15:45). The Bible formula for a living soul:
Dust of the Ground + Breath of Life = A Living Soul
We also don't *have* the spiritual concept of a "spirit." The word translated in the Bible into the English word "spirit" is referring to the Breath of Life given to us by God. Without the Breath, we are just plain dead -- back to the Dust of the Ground (Gen. 3:19; Psalms 104:29). The Bible formula for death:
A Living Soul - Breath of Life = Dust of the Ground

The question of what happens after death can be confusing. The Bible is not explicitly clear on when a person will reach their final eternal destiny. The Bible tells us that after the moment of death, a person is taken to Heaven or Hell based on whether he or she had received Christ as his or her Savior. For believers, after death is to be "away from the body and at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23). For unbelievers, after death means everlasting punishment in Hell (Luke 16:22-23).
This is where it can get confusing as to what happens after death. Revelation 20:11-15 describes all those in Hell being cast into the lake of fire. Revelation chapters 21-22 describe a New Heaven and New Earth. Therefore, it seems that until the final resurrection, after death a person resides in a “temporary” Heaven and Hell. A person's eternal destiny will not change, but the precise "location" of a person's eternal destiny will change. At some point after death, believers will be sent to the New Heavens and New Earth (Revelation 21:1). At some point after death, unbelievers will be thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11-15). These are the final, eternal destinations of all people - based entirely on whether a person had trusted Jesus Christ alone for the salvation of their sins.

I commend PAPA for his reply. I wholeheartedly agree with the great answer, but i need to add what I have come to understand AFTER the end of the answer. The dead are sleeping, in an unconscience state, unaware of anything. They will decompose (or others may just burn them) but their souls will be resurrected when we have the return of our prophesied Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and he that believeth in Him as the True Son of God, and accepts as their Lord and Savior will forever dwell in the house of the Lord forever. There DOES however state in most scriptures after that (not my words are word for word in the scriptures, my Bible is upstairs and I cannot wake up my baby, but I do know that the last part is also that the resurrected soul that Jesus calls up, if he/she (I feel too odd calling "it") repents and is baptised "in the spirit", which means full immersion, then will dwell in the house of the Lord forever and ever. Can I hear an Amen??? Cool,
Just how I believe and fee.
Peace!

Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 Says that the living know that they will die but the dead know nothing at all, that the dead are unconscience, have no work or devising or knowledge or wisdom after you die. The spirit that returns to God when we die is nothing more then the life force that animates our bodies, it's impersonal, but just what keeps us breathing just like the electricity that operates a toaster. Unplug a toaster and it no longer works, but the electricity does not take on any type of form of the toaster.

What is the condition of the dead?
Eccl. 9:5: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.”
Ps. 146:4: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts [“thoughts,” KJ, 145:4 in Dy; “all his thinking,” NE; “plans,” RS, NAB] do perish.”
Is there a spirit part of man that survives the death of the body?
Ezek. 18:4: “The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.” (RS, NE, KJ, and Dy all render the Hebrew word ne′phesh in this verse as “soul,” thus saying that it is the soul that dies. Some translations that render ne′phesh as “soul” in other passages use the expression “the man” or “the one” in this verse. So, the ne′phesh, the soul, is the person, not an immaterial part of him that survives when his body dies.) (See the main heading “Soul” for further details.)
Ps. 146:4: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish.” (The Hebrew word here translated “spirit” is a derivative of ru′ach. Some translators render it “breath.” When that ru′ach, or active life-force, leaves the body, the person’s thoughts perish; they do not continue in another realm.)

Paul indicated that to be absent from the body was to be with Christ. This is at least a spiritual awareness. There are 2 resurrections of the dead. Christians are raised when Christ returns to be with Him during the 1000 year reign. Persons outside of Christ are raised when God the Father brings the new heaven and new earth for the final judgment.
