A christian fears God, not for fear of death, he fears God for his awesomeness, His power, mainly he fears God for he/she is afraid of not pleasing God and will cause Him sadness on the things that they might or will not do.
It's not the fear of being punished or spanked as we know of, it's the fear of letting God down on the things that they know is right and wrong.

I fear God like I fear fire, to use a very simple analogy.
I know that fire is a good, wonderful and necessary thing, but if I don't respect it, I will get burned.
Jesus said this:
"I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!"
(Luke 12:4-5)
Yet the very next verses say:
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. "
(Luke 12:6-7)
and again:
"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom"
Luke 12:32

Neighter.
This is a fear that is almost completely the opposite of the fear of pain or heartache. I am talking about the fear of love. When you love somebody, you don't fear them hurting you because you trust them with all your heart, but you do fear hurting them, or causing them to be offended in any way. That is fear, very real fear.

To fear the true living God is to respect, honor the one who is the creator and owns everything.
"I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End." Says the LORD, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." Revelation 1:8 (NKJV).

That is respect to God. Have reverence to God. fear for your life or fear for your wrong doing is different from fear to God.
In another meaning "fear for your life it means worry for your life or worry for your wrong doings. OK?

You should love God. Fear him if you are living in deep sin, but connect to him and there's nothing to fear, he loves us.
1 John 4:18 KJV
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Fear means respect as in:
Respect the direction of the wind
Respect the law of gravity
Respect the difference between light (less stumbling) and
darkness (more stumbling)
Respect the difference between pure water and polluted water
Respect the difference between God and the devil (the father of all fibs)
Etc.

To fear God means to think before you act. Fear what the consequences of your actions might be.
