Pain is a defense mechanism. Joy and laughter are the effects of living.

Yes i agree with you that pain or illness will remind us that we are still alive. But in line with islamic teaching, pain or illness will remind us that
1)God has given us a warning and instructe us for being patient
2)God has given us a chance for decreasing our sins by giving us illness
3)God has instructed us to try hard to find its medicines for its curing.God has given us so many diseases but God gives us also its remedy except for aging disease.
4)God does not forget and loves us so God gives us an illness
5)God gives us a testing for our patience

I don't generally need reminding. Life provides pretty much constant input.

Pain in your body means you are not living according to your heart.
I do not experience pain, I do not get sick, or even a cold.
Live from the perspective of the heart/intuition and you will surpass dis-ease.
Blessings to you.
Peace in the heart.
