From time to time I mark out an area to work in by pacing the perimeter. Some of the tables I use require I know the square hectars. I'm a solid acers guy. How can I quickly estimate the hectar area?

Measure out 100 m on a gentle slope. Walk it, counting your paces in both directions. Average the number of paces. Memorize the number and call it n. A hectare is the area of a square 100 m on a side. Pace off the length and width of any rectangle and the area in hectares will be L*W/n^2.
(I was fortunate enough to have a stride of 1 m, which made the arithmetic really easy. For most people, n will lie between 105 and 130.)

Go out on the web and get the ESB free unit convertor. Converts everything to everything else. Want it in square rods, square furlongs, square parsecs? A super tool and the price is right.
