Biblical look at the subject of suicide.

I. Brought on by:

Life's weariness

"Am I a sea, or a whale, that thou settest a watch over me? When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint; Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions: So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than my life. I loathe it; I would not live alway: let me alone; for my days are vanity. What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him? And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him every moment? How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself? And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be." (Job 7:12-21). .

Life's futility

"Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit." (Ecclesiastes 2:17).

Anger

"And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death." (Jonah 4:8,9).

Hoplessness

"Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven. Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand. And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us. And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars. And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them. Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport. And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes. And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left. And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life." (Judges 16:22-30).

Sin

"And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king's house, and burnt the king's house over him with fire, and died, For his sins which he sinned in doing evil in the sight of the LORD, in walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he did, to make Israel to sin." (1 Kings 16:18,19).

Disappointment:

"And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ***, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father." (2 Samuel 17:23).

Betrayal of Jesus:

"When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me." (Matthew 27:1-10).

II. New Testament References:

Desired by some:

"And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them." (Revelation 9:6). .

Attempted but prevented:

"And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house." (Acts 16:27-32).

Imputed to Christ:

"Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world." (John 8:21-23).

satan tempts Jesus to:

"And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." (Luke 4:9-12)

III. Principles concerning:

The body is sacred

"What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death." (Philippians 1:18-20). .

Jesus has made His children priests:

"And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen." (Revelation 1:6).

Keep the faith:

"But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." (2 Timothy 4:5-8).

Outside of the verse "thou shalt not kill" there is nothing else.
A point about suicide, no one is unforgiveable. Even Judas was forgiveable, and he was very sorry for what he had done. He just killed himself before he could seek forgiveness. So pain, fear and self-loathing were stronger than his desire for forgiveness. With suicide it is very similar (unliess you are jumping on a grenade to save your buddies..that's not suicide..though I don't know why). Whatever is causing you to take your life is blinding the person to other options, which ultimate leads to their ill-fate. Since they are taking their life, they are left in the end violating God's commandment. The real question here is:
If a person is truly saved, and yet kills themselves, will they enter into heaven?

Too big a question for pithy answers here. Try these sites. My read of them is that they are all over the map. Some say it is condoned in the Bible, others that is is not.

For more Google Bible and suicide, I got 2 million hits.

Suicide is murder, but it's not the unforgivable sin. Lots of people think it is because the sinner doesn't get a chance to repent, but God judges our hearts. None of us can be sure that our heart is in the right condition, so we have to keep trying to do what is right. And prayer helps us draw closer to God, which helps us stay away from sin. Hope this wasn't too preachy.

I had a close friend in high school who committed suicide. I searched and searched the Bible to find out if he was in heaven or hell. My conclusion was that the Bible just doesn't say. We have examples of people who committed suicide such as Judas or King Saul. Their characters sure didn't mirror my friend's character. I decided that I can't understand his frame of mind or what he was going through. All I know is that he loved God with all his heart and it gives me comfort to think that I'll see him again.

Is easy to understand that God gave you life and only God can take it, no one has the right to kill anybody, not of course you with yourself, if somebody has a mission, a lesson to learn and pass over has to over come the obstacles and progress and not being a stupid, crier coward.

Psalm 7. Of David. (suicide?)

Lord, my God, in you have I hoped; save me from all who pursue me, and set me free. Lest at any time he seize my soul like a lion, while there is no one who delivers me or who saves me. Lord, my God, if I have done this: if there is sin in my hands. If I have returned evil to the ones repaying me.
b. Let me, empty, be cut off deservedly by my enemies. Let my enemy pursue my soul and take it, and trample my life in the earth, and let him reduce my fame into the dust
c. Arise, Lord, in your anger, and be exalted on the borders of my enemies. And arise, Lord, my God, in the commandment which you have ordered: for the congregation of the peoples will surround you. And because of this you returned on high.
d. The Lord judges the peoples. Judge me, Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to my integrity which is in me. Let the malice of sinners be consumed, for you guide the righteous.

g. Unless you are changed, he will brandish his sword, he has bent his bow, and he has prepared it. And in him he has prepared vessels of death: he has made his arrows with flames.

Here, I didn't actually read them and I'm sure you are going to have to look some of them up in the actual passages to make sense and some are probably just about people killing themselves, but here.

Put it this way. I've been a Christian a long time, and I am still not sure if Judas will be in heaven. I know that I personally, would never chance it though lol.
