Does anyone know of any? I will be there for about 30 hours visiting the city (alone) for the first time. I will be near 7th Ave & Broadway. I like Italian (esp. pizza), Chinese, and Mexican especially. I would prefer to eat somewhere that doesn't necessarily cater to couples or large parties only, but where a single person would feel comfortable.

I will be there mid-December if that makes any difference and will be on foot most of the time, if not all of the time. I will be coming in from Penn Station too. Has anyone ever eaten at Tracks in Penn Station? Is it good?

Thanks!

You have plenty to choose from in that area. I work right in the heart of Times Square and the dilemma is always where and what we are gonna eat. I sometimes eat out alone too and really you won't have a problem with most places and feel out of place.

*Carmine's-44th between 7th/Broadway and 8th
*John's Pizzeria-yummy pizza, but you can't order by the slice. A few doors down from Carmine's.
*Bar Americain-152 W. 52nd Street
*Blue Fin-inside the W Hotel in Times Square.
*Bluechili-251 W. 51st Street.
*Da Rosina-46th Street between 8th and 9th
*Viva Pancho-44th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue
*Havana Central-46th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue
*Ginger House-7th Avenue between 28th and 29th Street (a few blocks from Penn)
*Mario's Trattoria-493 9th Avenue
*Simply Pasta-41st Street between 6th and 7th Avenue

I've never actually gone into Tracks in Penn, but if you go upstairs where Amtrak is there are a lot of other places to go to as well.

Also try going on to www.menupages.com and you can bring up restaurants by area and cuisine and even menues so you have an idea of what's available.

Enjoy your trip.

• Artisanal 2 Park Avenue on 32nd between Park and Madison. This place is always packed and is popular for the theater-goers. The menu is a little pricey, but the wine and cheese pairings are at the utmost delectable quality and taste. This could also be an excellent post-show destination.

• Park Avenue Café on 100 63rd St. The “Pay-Your-Age” deal lets you choose three courses from the menu, and like the deal states, your meal costs the same amount as your age. The food is quality, and you choose the three dishes that you want from the menu, this is not a pre-fixed meal. Park Ave. Café isn’t conducive to a romantic outing, but you can’t pass up a meal that would normally cost you $70 per person.

• La Bonne Soupe on 48 W. 55th Street is another popular place for pre-theater dining. Located conveniently in the Theatre District, this soup-centric bistro offers frugal pre-show meals. Starting at $14, you can get a three-course meal consisting of salad, bread, soup, a glass of house wine and dessert. Just perfect for an early or a post theatre dinner.

Between Penn Station and Times Square is The Market Cafe on Ninth Avenue and 37th Street. It's a small place with exceptionally nice servers, excellent food, very reasonable prices and you'll feel comfortable by yourself. I often get two appetizers for dinner - they have a dish of scallops served over mashed potatoes that's delicious; it costs $8. Their fries are outstanding; the burgers are good and the steak is a bargain. The salmon is very good; the calamari is perfectly cooked. I would avoid the pizzas and pastas here. Desserts and coffee are wonderful.

It's a few blocks from Times Square, but near the Theatre District, but check out Zen Palate at 9th Avenue and 46th Street. It's Asian vegetarian and quite good.

Many of the restaurants in Times Square are chains, and you don't want that. I understand that 46th Street between 8th and 9th avenues is a veritable restaurant row (according to the tour guide on our Circle Line tour), so if Zen Palate isn't your speed, you're sure to find something else.

I recommend that you walk 2 blocks west to 9th Ave the position each and every block has a 1/2 dozen eating places of all descriptions. Ralphs for Italian by ability of 56th street is impressive. Churrascaria Plataforma on 51st for Brazilian BBQ.

I suggest for Italian you wave down a cab or jump on the train down to Mulberry Street and Canal. Little Italy....yum...and then just take your pick.

Time Square is too commercial.
