Does anyone know what the deal is with the long parade of NYPD squad cars (20+ cars) that drive around manhattan with their lights and sirens on. They drive by my apartment once or twice a day, and I'd really like to know why they do it.

Its a response drill. Sometimes is just a borough, sometimes the whole city and anything in between. You'd be amazed at how fast or how slow a response can be depending on time of day, and what location.

I like to call this the "Scare The Tourists Drill". What's really happening is NYPD gets federal anti-terrorism money, so every day, NYPD picks a prominent location, and tries to see how long it would take a car from each precinct to reach the location.

I see this on the West Side Highway at night and sometimes in the early morning. It's a terrorism drill to see how fast they can respond to a certain area. It may seem like an annoyance of sorts to some but it is good that they are practicing like this.

I asked a cop about it and it's supposed to show the evil doers that want to hurt NYC that the police are out and about and on the job. I don't know if it's working, I would think that after one or two times, criminals and terrorists would be on to it.

But I like the pretty lights on top of their cars and when I wave there is always a hunky cop that waves back, so I kind of like it.

the reason why you see the police convoy, in my opinion, is to show NYers and tourists that NY would not be bullied by terrorists again. its basically saying to the "you got lucky 2x, the third time will get you f@#ked up!!!"

Its the NYPD way of saying you are safe in our city

Supposedly they run drills for terrorism/emergency response. It's loud and traffic-disruptive, but i hope it helps.
