Try Damn Small Linux. Get the live cd then when it boots up you get the fluxbox window manager or Joe's window manager (default). You can go to the menu->system->install to a flash drive

It sends you through a quick quesitonairre and install Damn Small Linux to your flash drive. 10 minutes tops.

Note: your flash drive will need to be at least 48MB for this install to work.

Did you look at Ubuntu Live CD? You don't install it, it just runs. If you're new, you might find it too cumbersome and if you format your drive would have to reinstall whatever you had before and set it up again, for no real reason. It has an option to install it if you wish, so I guess all you need is a CD burner.

try looking at "puppy linux" in a google search. Or go here http://www.zen45800.zen.co.uk/puppy3/page1.htm
My husband has it on his and is very happy about it. Other than that, I don't know much about it.
